Neltharion's Lair is the cavern located in Highmountain, southeast of Thunder Totem. It was here where Neltharion lived before he became Deathwing.[1] Class leaders ventured inside to recover the 
[Hammer of Khaz'goroth] stolen by Dargrul the Underking.[2] The entrance is at Snowblind Mesa [50, 68] - a short walk East up the hill from the cliffs behind Thunder Totem. The dragon-sized entrance is Neltharion's Vault.
The exit (up a path to the right of the last boss, Dargul, marked by torches) takes you to The Bartering Cave behind Spiritwatch Point. A fake portal that Dargrul destroys can be found at Understone Breach. Note that this is the only exit route for Mythic dungeons, other than leaving the group and then being re-invited, to get repairs done without an 
[Auto-Hammer] or 
[Jeeves].
Background[]
The cave saw a succession of occupants over time. An evil older than dragons was deemed to have resided here once,[3] and an empowered black dragon was also here[4] before the great dragon Neltharion eventually settled in it and gave it its name.
At some point, the vrykul Magnar Icebreaker convinced a raiding party of fellow warriors to accompany him into the lair. They waited until they saw the Dragon Aspect leave his mountain, and then they went inside. They were attacked by the lair's defenders, and none but Magnar himself survived, the vrykul also managing to get away with one of Neltharion's scales.[5]
After the start of the War of the Ancients, Neltharion tortured a captured eredar warlock there. The great wyrm notably tested the effects of the Dragon Soul on the demon, inflicting him great pain before killing him.[6] Malfurion Stormrage later drifted through the Emerald Dream in order to infiltrate the black wyrm's lair, wishing to discover how to steal the Dragon Soul. There, the druid discovered that the lair's caverns had been partially converted into a giant smithy, with many goblins working under the watchful eye of Meklo in order to forge Neltharion's adamantine plates.[7] Several adamantine mines could actually be found around the mountain, and goblins mined it for their nefarious purposes. The lair had secret accesses for the goblins to bring the raw materials in, and was also defended by gray-skinned trolls magically kept under Neltharion's sway.[8]
Illidan Stormrage later managed to use one of the black wyrm's discarded scales to find the lair.[9]
At some point, Deathwing slew many of his kin there in his fury, leaving their bones to decay.[10]

The Earth Warder Neltharion, later known as Deathwing, once called this cavern home. Since his fall, the drogbar that once worshipped the great dragon built their capital within this ancient lair. Now, Dargrul, chieftain of the drogbar, rallies a massive army within these depths. Bolstered by the Hammer of Khaz'goroth, this army will surge from the mountainside if left unchecked, devastating Highmountain and threatening the security of all Azeroth.
Battle for Azeroth[]
In order to empower the Heart of Azeroth with the essence of the Dragon Aspects, adventurers had to travel there with Spiritwalker Ebonhorn.[10] Because of Azerite eruption, the lingering power of the black dragonflight awoke many earth elementals who started fighting anything they could see, killing several Stonedark watchers. Ma'haat the Indomitable, a stone lord from Deepholm, was here to retrieve the dragonflight's essence.[11]

- During the War of the Ancients Trilogy books, Neltharion's lair was stated to be a in a distant, dismal[12] wasteland instead of being in the relatively lush Highmountain.
