Aldur'thar: The Desolation Gate is the second line of defense used by the Scourge in Icecrown. Its gate and walls are made almost entirely of saronite, near indestructible, and manned by massive Scourge constructs.[1] Behind this gate lies the Valley of Fallen Heroes.
Both the Alliance and the Horde built a small air base on top of Aldur'thar, which they used as a staging point for bombing runs at The Bombardment and the Valley of Fallen Heroes. These camps have remained undetected because they use the newfound infra-green energy, becoming invisible to the naked eye.[2]
History[]
Wrath of the Lich King[]
As the sole way for any kind of force to invade Icecrown Citadel would be to breach these gates (including Mord'rethar: The Death Gate and Corp'rethar: The Horror Gate) in turn, the efforts of the death knights of the Ebon Blade Thassarian and Koltira Deathweaver working with the Alliance and the Horde was what allowed them to pass these defenses during the war against the Lich King.[1]
The death knights sent the adventurers to investigate the Cult of the Damned activities,[3] then to sabotage Aldur'thar by killing Dark Subjugators,[4] and later the overseers Faedris, Jhaeqon, Veraj and Savryn.[5] The adventurers also had to sabotage the concoctions the cultists make, and later gathered more information by placing a Dark Messenger spy[6] and collecting the Cult of the Damned Thesis.[7] This information led to the death of a very powerful cultist, Alumeth the Ascended.[8] Once all the missions were completed, the death knights considered the gate to be weakened enough for the main armies to take over, and sent the adventurers further into Icecrown to conquer the Valley of Fallen Heroes and secure the Ironwall Rampart.[9]
Shadowlands[]
Following the destruction of the Helm of Domination by Sylvanas Windrunner, and with it the reign of the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon, Aldur'thar became a major point of operation for the Cult of the Damned after they returned under the control of Herald Dalora, a Mawsworn servant of Zovaal the Jailer.
