The assault on Light's Hope Chapel was a battle led by the Knights of the Ebon Blade against the Knights of the Silver Hand, in order to raise Tirion Fordring as a death knight to be a part of the Four Horsemen.
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, the Lich King Bolvar Fordragon ordered the Deathlord to rebuild the Four Horsemen, as powerful champions against the Burning Legion.[1] With three already recruited, a leader was needed, and the Lich King chose the recently fallen Tirion Fordring for this honor.
Darion Mograine initially opposed this order, considering that Tirion deserves more than a life of anguish and undeath, as he was one of the greatest champions Azeroth has known. He eventually agreed to follow the will of the Deathlord, but warned them that there will be no redemption for what they were about to do, and since the Silver Hand would not give up easily, they would have to launch an attack on Light's Hope Chapel.
Later, the death knights arrived at Light's Hope Chapel and waited outside, planning their distraction and invasion. Under the directions of Darion Mograine, the Deathlord went to the tomb behind the chapel where the power of the Light was weak, in order to raise an army of ghouls that will distract the Argent Sentries long enough for them to make their way to the Sanctum of Light.
With the distraction in place, the Ebon Blade overpowered Maxwell Tyrosus and made their way through the defenses of the Silver Hand. In the Hall of Champions, where Tirion's body rests, the death knights faced Lady Liadrin who tried to stop them, but was defeated as well. Just as the Deathlord was about to claim Tirion, the Light intervened and burned the surrounded death knights. Not wanting to let the Ebon Blade fall, Darion opened a [Death Gate] for the others to escape and went through the portal but died from his injuries.[2]
As the assault ended with the victory of the Silver Hand, Darion Mograine was later raised by the Deathlord abord Acherus as the fourth and final horseman. With the Four Horsemen assembled and Darion as their leader, the Knights of the Ebon Blade would be prepared for the war with the Legion.[3]
The battle was not without consequences, as the relations between the Ebon Blade with the Silver Hand and the Argent Crusade deteriorated greatly. Years later, at the time of the return of the Scourge, sentries of the Argent Crusade mentioned to the death knights that they have not forgotten what the Ebon Blade attempted at Light's Hope Chapel, and that while they were not enemies, nor were they considered allies.[4]
