This article contains lore taken from Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

A bishop from the Church of the Holy Light was responsible for holding services and providing blessings for the Menethil family in their private chapel in Capital City.[1] He was apparently highly trusted, as he was the only person besides the royal family and Lord Uther to know of the secret passageways through the royal palace.[2] He has only ever been referred to as "the bishop", so his given name is unknown.

He notably held a service for the royal family and their visitors—Muradin Bronzebeard, King Thoras Trollbane, and Lady Jaina Proudmoore—on the day that the twelve-year-old Prince Arthas met the eleven-year-old Jaina for the first time.[1] During the winter in which Arthas' horse Invincible died, the bishop accompanied King Terenas and Lord Uther on a diplomatic visit to Stromgarde.[3]

During his escape from the palace at the start of the Plaguelands civil war, Arthas noted that the bishop was "gone" just like the other Menethils and Uther,[2] meaning that he died at some point or at least that Arthas believed him to be dead.

Quotes[]

Sermon (fragmentary, due to Arthas not paying close attention)
"...and His Royal Highness, Arthas Menethil. May the Light's blessing be upon him in every thought, word, and deed, so that he may thrive beneath it and grow to serve it as its paladin. May the Light shine on Her Royal Majesty, Lianne Menethil, that she ... And we humbly request the Light's blessing on Lady Jaina Proudmoore. May she be blessed with its healing and wisdom, that she ... and that her studies at Dalaran go well. We ask that she become a representative of the Light, and that in the role of a mage, she will serve her people well and truly."[1]

Speculation[]

Questionmark-medium
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

If Arthas was wrong about the bishop's death, he may have been Benedictus Voss (who later became a high priest of the Scarlet Crusade), since Calia Menethil mentions in H [50] The Hidden Need that she once listened to Voss' sermons.
