Black Morass (film) before battle

The Black Morass just before the battle between the Horde and the Stormwind army

The Black Morass (or simply the Morass) is a zone in Azeroth, home to the Azeroth-side Great Gate. When the Horde arrived on Azeroth it was here that they built their encampment, and began work constructing a matching gate.

The area was later the location of the battle between the army of Stormwind and the Horde warband, as well as the mak'gora between Durotan and Gul'dan, and Blackhand and Lothar.

The orcs traveling from Draenor found themselves climbing out of a glowing portal set horizontally into the marshy earth of the Black Morass. The opening of the portal caused the immediate area to be destroyed, and nearby trees to topple into it, but only lasted a few minutes, after which the portal vanished. Disturbed by her passage between the two worlds, Draka gave birth to Go'el on the very edge of the portal.

Following the orcs' arrival on Azeroth the area around the orcs' encampment rapidly began to change. Prior to Durotan's meeting with the humans of Stormwind he noticed that the land was changing to resemble that on the other side of the portal, the marshy swampland rapidly drying out. The less affected areas still bore plants and areas of stagnant water; over time the water seems to become polluted by the fel, turning it a bright green, and the plants begin to die. In the parts where the changes have progressed the furthest the ground has turned entirely to dirt, parched and thirsty, even the plants having died and been ground to dust.[1] However, the corruption was highly localized: lush trees still cover the nearby hills, and dense foliage surrounds the encampment.
