Book of Medivh

The Book of Medivh.

The Book of Medivh refers to the only remaining spellbook[1][2] written by Medivh, the Last Guardian of Tirisfal.

Medivh's spellbook was kept in the Royal Library of New Stormwind following his death. It was retrieved by Alterac agents and taken to their kingdom. Teron Gorefiend with the help of Deathwing made a deal with Alterac king - Aiden Perenolde - and got the book in exchange for destroying Alliance outposts in Alterac.[3] The Horde of Draenor needed the artifact because it matched with a constellation from their world known as "the Tome". Ner'zhul needed it along with the Jeweled Scepter of Sargeras and the Eye of Dalaran to await a special celestial event,[4] which would give off enough energy to create a multitude of ultimately unstable portals across the planet simultaneously, which tore Draenor apart. Obris held the book on the verge of death, and handed it to Khadgar. Khadgar and his magi used its knowledge to destroy the Dark Portal from Draenor's side, thus protecting Azeroth from the destruction of Draenor.

However, as the gateway buckled under the weight of their spellwork, Khadgar dispatched a Wildhammer gryphon rider with the Skull of Gul'dan and the Book back to Azeroth,[5] with orders to give them to the Kirin Tor, where he belived they would be safe. The messenger only narrowly succeeded, escaping through the gateway just as it slammed shut and severed the way between Azeroth and Draenor.[6]

Third War[]

The gryphon rider was successful in his mission as both the Book of Medivh and the Skull of Gul'dan were delivered into the custody of the Kirin Tor and were placed in a secure vault within Dalaran. The Book of Medivh was noted to have contained an extraordinary amount of power and knowledge. During the Third War, the Kirin Tor's possession of the Book of Medivh would lead the Scourge led by the death knight Arthas Menethil and the lich Kel'Thuzad to launch a siege against Dalaran.

During the siege, the Kirin Tor's leader Archmage Antonidas was killed by Frostmourne, while Kel'Thuzad shattered the enchanted vault holding the Book of Medivh and retrieved the artifact. As he prepared to open the way for the Legion, the lich marveled at Medivh's spellbook. In life, he had never seen the tome, which was one of the most closely guarded artifacts in Dalaran, and never had permission to touch it. He now understood why as the book contained an extraordinary amount of power and knowledge, and drawing on all its powers allowed him to create a rift that linked Azeroth and the Twisting Nether. From this rift, the Burning Legion led by Archimonde the Defiler were able to enter Azeroth.[7]

After Archimonde and the Legion left for Kalimdor, the book remained in the hands of Kel'Thuzad.[8]

At some point, Kel'Thuzad apparently gave the book to his Cult of the Damned, and it was stored inside Scholomance. On orders from Gul'dan, members of the Shadow Council led by Jergosh the Invoker retrieve it from Caer Darrow during the third invasion of the Burning Legion. Gul'dan intended to use the book, along with the Inv staff 2h artifactsargeras d 01 [Scepter of Sargeras] and the Eye of Dalaran, to open rifts through which the armies of countless Burning Legion's worlds could invade Azeroth. However, during the mission Jergosh was killed and the Book taken from him by a warlock adventurer of the Council of the Black Harvest.[9] They brought the Eye and the Book to the Tomb of Sargeras for Gul'dan's ritual, pretending to be his ally as a traitor to Azeroth, until then stopped him and retrieved the Scepter.[10] It is unknown whether the Eye and the Book were also retrieved.

In Karazhan, the Shade of Nielas Aran has Inv misc book 06 [Medivh's Journal], which could also be considered a "Book of Medivh". Mages from the Violet Eye - a sect of the Kirin Tor sent to spy on Medivh - were looking for the book and went mad when they read it. It was revealed that Kamsis gave the book to the Shade of Aran. When the player reads the book at the Master's Terrace they can watch into the past how Medivh killed the mighty blue dragon Arcanagos, now better known as Nightbane.
