This article contains lore taken from Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft II: Beyond the Dark Portal, the manuals, and/or official bonus maps.

Sharpened horns, crimson with blood of those unfortunate enough to be caught in their path, herald the advance of the Orcish Catapult. Approaching on the battlefield, its grim visage is enough to make the weak Human troops flee in stark terror. These cumbersome, wheeled machines launch deadly incendiary shot which explodes upon impact. The sheer destructive force of these great engines of war make them feared and respected throughout the land.[1]

Information

  • Catapults are siege units with a very powerful, long-ranged attack. They are also slow, vulnerable, cannot hit units adjacent to themselves, and are expensive and time-consuming to produce. They cannot attack flying units.
  • They are best used offensively to destroy enemy towers and other buildings, units hiding behind walls, and tightly-packed units in general. Having your Death Knights cast Haste on them can help them keep up with your attacking troops.
  • They can also be used defensively, for example to destroy Battleships from beyond their range. They are also useful against large groups of attacking troops, and can retaliate against enemy Ballistas and/or "snipe" unsuspecting Mages.
  • They are effective when used for hit-and-run attacks with Transports - put several Catapults in a Transport, unload them near an unsuspecting enemy, fire and retreat before he can react.
  • A Catapult's hit will damage all units in the adjacent square as well. This "splash" damage is approximately one-quarter the damage of a direct hit.
  • They cannot be repaired; all damage done to them is permanent.
  • A Catapult with Unholy Armor can be very annoying to deal with, as it is immune to the Mage's Polymorph spell.
