This article contains lore taken from Warcraft novels, novellas, or short stories.

Elder Zhanak was an old orc shaman who had watched over the Stones of Prophecy for decades. He understood the elemental spirits were not peaceful but energetic and not passive but adaptive. He accepted their various moods, knowing there wasn't much he could do about it. He meditated, patiently waiting for the elements to speak to him when they wanted. He was nearly blind, seeing only smudges of light and shadow beyond two arms' length, but his waning senses were not so crippling with the elements as his ally. He was assisted by several apprentices.

When Grom Hellscream arrived to the Stones of Prophecy to verify Garrosh's claims, Zhanak intended to turn the group away. While he showed warmth and respect towards Grom, he was harsh towards Garrosh due to the elemental spirits loathing his presence. Zhanak saw through Garrosh's lies and advised Grom to kill Garrosh before he could upset the fate of the world. Despite this, Grom wanted to see for himself if there was weakness within their people and correct it. Zhanak acquiesced, but insisted that Garrosh stay away from the Stones.

Grom took the shard of the Vision of Time to the spirits and they revealed the history of the Horde in the main universe. Zhanak was also able to see the vision and was horrified at what the future held for them. However, as he saw further, he wept with joy at how Grom sacrificed himself to redeem the orcs of the corruption, saving them all.

Not wanting Grom to see this part of the vision, Garrosh suffocated Zhanak, assuring him that the ancestors would welcome him home. Garrosh then claimed that the vision had killed the old shaman to convince the guards to pull Grom out of the vision before he could see his redemption.[1]
