Exodus of the Horde was used as the game's demo of Warcraft III and called "Prologue". In the retail version of Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, the last three missions were cut out and just the tutorial levels were left as the "Prologue campaign" — with the Introduction: The Prophecy and Cinematic: Thrall's Vision added — however, it was extended in the official "Custom campaign" in Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne adding the last three missions back. Although the remaining missions were added in the Frozen Throne, the voice acting was removed because it had only been recorded in English for the demo, and couldn't be localized into other regions. The complete campaign with voice acting was included in Warcraft III: Reforged.

The orc campaign continued in The Invasion of Kalimdor.

Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos (Prologue campaign)[]

Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (Custom campaign)[]

Warcraft III: Reforged (Prologue)[]

Differences from both versions[]

  • First two missions are not included (they are included in the Reign of Chaos tutorial).
  • In Riders of the Storm, has non-functional triggers where the archmage was supposed to be captured (as they are unfunctional the actual lore may be that the archmage was killed in the battle).
  • Has demolishers.
  • Murlocs have Frozen Throne-style spikes on their backs.
  • Priests have Frozen Throne-style outfits.
  • Uses Frozen Throne campaign balance.
  • Has two different loading screens in the first two levels than the versions that appear in the Reign of Chaos tutorial.
  • In Departures, the 2 Knights at the end of the mission are replaced by Captains. The knight model is not present in the demo.
  • In Riders of the Storm, the archmage leading the humans is always named Kelen the Seeker. In the Custom campaign, his name is randomly generated (which means that "Kelen the Seeker" is only one of several possible names he might get) as in a custom map.
  • Has catapults.
  • Murlocs have Reign of Chaos-style fins on their backs.
  • Priests have Reign of Chaos-style outfits.
  • Uses Reign of Chaos campaign balance.

Disadvantages from each version[]

  • Thrall's items and tomes aren't saved from the Prologue to the Custom campaign.
  • There is a visibility bug with Sen'jin in The Fires Down Below.
  • Custom campaign has no voice acting.
  • Some patch changes that affect the Reign of Chaos campaign missions are absent in the demo campaign (it cannot be patched).
  • Downloadable version don't have the complete music (a promotional disc containing the demo was released in some events, including a deal with AMC Theaters which includes the full version of the music).
