Feed Pet is a level 5 hunter ability. It allows the hunter to quickly heal their pet while out of combat.
Usage[]
This ability can be used by pressing the Feed Pet icon, then clicking on a food item; or by dragging a food item from your backpack and dropping it onto either your pet's portrait or your pet itself.
Feed Pet can also be cast without having to click the food by using the following macro:
#showtooltip /cast Feed Pet /use Item Name
Notes[]
- Food types that don't frequently drop from mobs can be purchased from vendors instead. Vendors typically only sell one type of food, specified by the title under their name, e.g. <Bread Vendor>.
- Healing from Feed Pet is the same regardless of the food's level.
- Many pets can eat uncooked food that the hunter can't.
- Pets that eat bread can eat food conjured by mages.
Happiness[]
Before Patch 4.1, feeding your pet did not heal it. Instead, feeding increased your pet's happiness and kept it in a good mood. The happier a pet was, the more damage it dealt:
- Happy: 125% damage
- Content: 100% damage
- Unhappy: 75% damage
However when the glyph system was added, the Glyph of Mending, which at the time increased happiness level, made feeding a pet not as important. In Cataclysm the happiness levels were removed, and the pet now stays in happy mood. Feeding now just heals the pet rather than making it happier.
Patch changes[]
- Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): Now learned at level 5 (was 13).
- Patch 7.1.0 (2016-10-25): Now learned at level 13 (was 11).
- Patch 4.1.0 (2011-04-26): The Feed Pet ability now instantly heals 50% of the pet's health. Cannot be used in combat. Requires diet-appropriate food.
