The unnamed father of Aratas was a huge and powerful earth elemental who appeared in Maraudon after the Cataclysm. He created a new race of centaur known as the perfect ones, led by Aratas, with the intent of conquering Azeroth and purging it of its other mortal races. Both the elemental and his creations were destroyed by the Garad'kra.

Biography[]

The elemental emerged in Maraudon at some point after the death of Princess Theradras. He believed that Azeroth's mortal races were responsible for the imbalance in nature that led to the Cataclysm. In response, he created the perfect ones to unite the existing centaur tribes, reclaim Azeroth from those who had "defiled" it, and usher in a new age in which the horse-men would reign over the world, with the High Khan Aratas as their ruler.[1] Aratas referred to the elemental as his "father" and to the other perfect ones as his "brothers".[2][3] The khan wielded a spear forged in Deepholm which carried the power of his father.[4]

While Aratas led the centaur in launching attacks on the Horde, the elemental hid deep in Maraudon, gathering his strength and bolstering the perfect ones' ranks daily.[1] When the time was right, Aratas planned to unleash his father to crush the Horde's capital cities, though at least one of his underlings worried that the elemental was uncontrollable.[5] Rumors among the centaur army claimed that the elemental could only be destroyed by a weapon "not of Azeroth".[6]

Aratas' father's death

To stop Aratas, a team of the Garad'kra militia confronted him at the entrance to Maraudon. In the ensuing battle, he captured their leader Shagara and brought her into the temple with the intent of sacrificing her to his father. Tasting the orc's flesh would send the elemental into a bloodlust and cause him to "cull the weak" from all of Azeroth.[7] The Garad'kra chased after him into the outer chamber of Maraudon, where the khan summoned his father to fight them. The elemental's hide proved to be invincible to Ironhoof's axe, Felgrim's shadow magic, and Ashra's holy magic alike. Meanwhile, the Garad'kra's ally Malgar pursued Aratas and killed him with Shagara's help. The two orcs realized that Aratas' spear might be the elemental's only weakness and ran back to the main chamber. Malgar tossed Aratas' decapitated head at the elemental to distract it, sending it into a rage, while Shagara gave the khan's spear to Ashra. After the others used their abilities to give him an opening, Ashra drove the spear into the elemental's body, causing him to explode.[8] With the deaths of Aratas and his father, the Horde was saved and was able to scatter the remaining centaur.[9]

Speculation[]

Questionmark-medium
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
  • Based on the elemental's appearance and size, he may have been a Stone Lord.
  • Just as the centaurs were born from the relationship between Theradras and Zaetar, it is possible that Aratas' father reproduced the same process to create the perfect ones.
