Forums: Village pump → Changes to elinks templates

heya! as a heads up to everyone, i'm about to make some changes to the various elinks templates. the main things are:

  • removing the "beta" and "ptr" parameters, which i've never seen used in my time here
  • creating a couple of wrapper templates so that all the info that's the same across different elinks templates will be centralized. this way, changing the urls (stuff like adding & removing subdomains, e.g. the "classic" in "classic.wowhead.com") will be much easier in the future. instead of editing all the templates, we'll only need to edit two.
  • having the subdomains be decided with variables instead of parameters. right now, you have to add "|classic=" every time you want an elinks template to point to classic.wowhead.com. after the change, having (for example) {{Classic only}} at the top of the page will also change the wowhead link in the elinks template. there'll also be a "sub" parameter as a manual option, so you can manually choose the subdomain.

for the most part, the various templates will work the same. the main difference to the average editor will be the above-mentioned removal of "|classic=" and the like. the code for each template will look way different, but creating a new one should still be the same general process of "copy an existing elinks template & change the details as needed"

if you notice anything break or have any questions or suggestions, let me know! --Eithris (talk) 01:14, 18 June 2022 (UTC)
