Forums: Village pump → Class categorization

The classes in WoW are all members of Category:WoW classes and all are also members of Category:Classes.

Since Category:WoW classes is also a member of Category:Classes (which by itself makes sense) it is a violation of WP:CAT. However, I don't see a clear way to resolve this as there are other class types in Category:Classes so it's not a simple switch. Thoughts? --PcjWowpedia admin (TDrop me a line!C207,729 contributions and counting) 13:08, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Revert the WP:CAT change that introduced this and call it a day. — foxlit (talk) 13:25, 22 July 2017 (UTC)
There's also the NPC titles category which more often than not is used for NPC/unplayable classes when there is actually a NPC classes category.. Also, we got to remember than most "classes" than are not already "WoW classes" come from the RPG, which is not canon anymore, so they should probably be put in the "RPG classes" category.Big cleanup is probably in order. Well yeah either a rewording, cleanup, or add this case as an exception. PeterWind (talk) 18:25, 22 July 2017 (UTC)

Howdy people. Okay, following the conversations here and here, we noticed that Category:NPC classes, Category:NPC titles, Category:RPG professions, Category:Variant classes, Category:Racial iconic classes are almost all doing the same thing. So, shall we merge them? Yes, no? How? Xporc (talk) 19:16, 19 August 2017 (UTC)

I've honestly never even noticed there was a Lore professions category. I agree with Mordecay's propositions: Let RPG categories remain to categorize RPG stuff, but probably merge "RPG classes" and "RPG professions". I'd argue for merging "NPC classes", "NPC titles" and "Lore professions" into one category, but I'm not immediately certain what that should be titled; preferably one named "Lore X" and not "NPC X", since not all lore characters exist as NPCs, but all NPCs exist as characters (well, sort of). This gets a bit weird because NPC class is about a term from the RPG, though. -- IconSmall TrollDeathKnight Male DeludedTroll (talkcontribs) 05:12, 21 August 2017 (UTC)
The question would be whether wowpedia wants to keep the RPG naming or not for the categories. I'd prefer not given its status and what not. Since most of those jobs go under the occupation line in infoboxes what about Category:NPC occupations for canon jobs and RPG occupations for non-canon from all the RPG categories listed above (+Category:Core classes)? Mordecay (talk) 21:54, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
They all do seem to be overlapping. Merge all RPG into one RPG category and merge all lore/NPC into another category. Do not use the word "title" in the new naming, as "title" should mean one of two things, either the <title> under a character's name or a honorific title such as "Lord" and "King". It should not mean something similar to a job. Also, do not the word "class" in the new naming, as "class" should mean one of two things, either the specific meaning in Warcraft/WoW, that has established these as a certain class with a set of skills, or the social class structure - royalty, commoner, etc. Mixing in another meaning which is not established in wow (Expert) just makes this confusing. Celellach (talk) 22:05, 22 August 2017 (UTC)
Agreed with this. So I guess it means that "professions" and "occupations" are left as the names for the categories? Mordecay (talk) 21:07, 8 October 2017 (UTC)
