Forums: Village pump → Moving to a gamepedia url
(This topic is archived. Please do not edit this page!)

Hey all. Curse is wanting to move us to a gamepedia url (either wow.gamepedia.com or warcraft.gamepedia.com, whichever we want, with whichever we don't choose as a redirect to the one we do). The active admins have been having a private discussion on the admin email list and the general feeling there is that we're all okay with it, but we wanted to check with everyone before we "sign off" on the move.

Curse has already been cross-wiki linking us on their other warcraft universe-related wikis (hearthstone and heroes), but they're willing to help out some more with awareness and support, things like big mindshare drives on Curse.com/MMO-C and other sites, for instance. There's some other goodies down the line too if we move, but I don't think I can talk about that yet.

If we do move, the only thing that changes is the default url to access the site goes from wowpedia.org/whatever to wow (or warcraft).gamepedia.com/whatever. Old links will always work and no site branding is going to change. If we do move I'm still going to link to us on the @Wowpedia twitter account/the official forums using a wowpedia url as I always have. We're already on the gamepedia hosting platform, so there's no pain involved there since we've already had the user account merge.

Anyway, let your thoughts be known here. You can also always contact the Wowpedia admin mailing list or me personally via email if you have issues you don't want to share publicly. Thanks as always for your time and your edits. Wowpedia wouldn't be the wiki it is without your support. --k_d3 21:17, 14 July 2014 (UTC)

In my opinion, to be honest, I like the URL the way it is, "wowpedia.org". But if it means more awareness and support I'm fine with it. That will help a lot. Also thanks Kd3 for letting us know about this. SmileySurafbrovWowpedia administrator T / C 22:14, 15 July 2014 (UTC)
If we absolutely need to change the URL to get the new things then I think it should be the wow one, or even wowpedia.gamepedia.com. If it isn't necessary then I agree that the current URL is fine how it is. Changing it might make users wonder why their URL isn't wowpedia.org anymore. Not to bring up old history, but I don't believe that Wikia ever asked us to change the URL before the split (I don't remember all details, so they might have, but wowwiki is still wowwiki.com), so some people might not like changing URL cause Curse wants us to. Can this site survive another URL change? Google still redirects a lot of traffic to the pre-fork wiki, and where you appear on google is kind of important if you want the community to keep growing. Ddcorkum (talk) 00:33, 19 July 2014 (UTC)

Hello, everybody. I realize i'm a year and a half late, but i'm still curious what were the reasons for this Gamepedia merge... (Would've asked on that thread, but the header there said "dead topic, Please do not edit this page!") Was there any discussion at that time, about available options, at all? -- Napoleon_9th (talk) 02:15, 17 December 2014 (UTC)

Nothing really changed. We've been on Curse since Wowpedia was created (back in October 2010), the Gamepedia merge was mainly a function of getting all the wikis on the same platform so maintenance/updates would go much quicker. Before the merge, they had to update each wiki individually, which took on the order of days. Now? On the order of hours. --k_d3 03:14, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
Except prior to May 2013 i could still edit with my old wowpedia account, and now i had to create or merge a Curse account in order to contribute... -- Napoleon_9th (talk) 16:10, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
Ah, yah, forgot to mention the user merge thing. Anyway, barring Curse doing something crazy, your Curse account should be all you need. We're not planning on going anywhere any time soon. The last thing the world needs is yet another Warcraft wiki. --k_d3 22:31, 17 December 2014 (UTC)
