(This topic is archived. Please do not edit this page!)

This post is being made at both WoWWiki and Wowpedia. I would hope that the community on both sides would unanimously support me in this.

I ask that everyone pause and consider the consequences of their actions -- not just to themselves but to the community as a whole -- before taking action against which diminishes or reflects poorly on either fork. Acts of vandalism is wrong, no matter the reason. Both WoWWiki and Wowpedia have a legal right to exist (as enshrined by the copywrite license we all agree to when we make contributions).

The very concept of a Wiki requires that we collaborate, assume good faith, and treat each other with dignity and respect. It is on this basis that large Wikis such as WoWWiki/Wowpedia have come to be so successful. Despite the many differences of opinion between those participating in the fork and those not participating, I think we all need to remember the importance of acting with a kind, friendly spirit when editing BOTH wikis. This community (combined, both forks) was founded on principles of working together. As such, vandalism, or attempting to discredit or interfere with the operation of either portion of the community, is contrary to the principles that this community stands upon.

By vandalising either fork, be it WoWWiki or Wowpedia, you are chosing to act on personal motivations which fly in the face of the community spirit that has made this so successful.

The above is merely my opinion, as a casual contributer. Do you agree/disagree? --Ddcorkum (talk) 22:32, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

Vandalism is unacceptable. --g0urra[T҂C] 22:43, 5 November 2010 (UTC)

I am aware where this is coming from. I can not and will not condone any vandalizing of WoWWiki by Wowpedia's community, and vice versa. Wowpedia must be the bigger person, and not give Wikia anything to use against us. Be professionals here, people. Let WoWWiki die in peace.--SWM2448 22:50, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
Nor will I condone anyone vandalizing Wowpedia in the name of WoWWiki. I want us to all be civilized about this. If anyone vandalizes a page here and you suspect it's someone from WoWWiki being vindictive, please let me know on my talk page on WoWWiki. Deadlykris (talk) 23:33, 5 November 2010 (UTC)
I will. Personally I don't see the point in vandalizing articles and I don't see why people would do that. --Sairez (talk) 00:42, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

I personally find the vandalism amusing - especially when it was directed at me (my user pages were messed about way back when by vindictive people I outwitted, lol) - but I agree with SWM. Just leave WoWWiki to rot, let Wikia try to save their sinking ship - they don't need our help to send it to the bottom. Let's leave it be, and focus on our community here. --IconSmall Deathwing.gif Joshmaul, Loremaster of Chaos (Leave a Message) 23:24, 6 November 2010 (UTC)

Theres lots of vandalism on Wowwiki which has gone un-reverted, and I'm not even counting g0urrabots' edits. Its amusing that Wikia thought only 1 semi-active person could handle it. Wikia might as well give up now, as WoWWiki's edits since the admins demotion, is now nothing but fanfic in the main namespace, and CRAPtons of vandalism. Taking bets on when wowwiki loses its fansite status due to gold ads, etc not getting dealt with. lol Ressy (talk) 00:14, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
I don't think you quite understand the point of why I made this thread. Ddcorkum (talk) 04:26, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Oh, I do. I even reverted some of that Vandalism on WoWWiki. Went to go revert more there, and kept timing out constantly, so I gave up. Ressy (talk) 12:31, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Ddcorkum, I don't think anyone is condoning or suggesting vandalism is okay, but I think many would agree as editors we have decided to move on to Wowpedia which means we not only won't be adding content to WoWWiki, but we won't be cleaning up either. Are you suggesting we try to commit clean up time to WoWWiki just because the dishonorable will continue to vandalize it?
Also, in the vein of cooperation, Wikia has chosen to not cooperate with a large chunk of its community and I don't believe in largely asymmetric or one-way cooperation. I will not make duplicate additions or updates to WoWWiki just because it is trying to serve the same purpose as Wowpedia. You would have to make a very compelling argument to convince people to do everything twice and so far, in my opinion, you haven't. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 3:04 PM PST 7 Nov 2010
Sigh. Please re-read my original post. You've completely missed the point. I am not asking anyone from here to help WoWWiki, nor am I asking anyone there to help Wowpedia. I am asking people not to engage in acts of vandalism, and to recognize the legitimite right of the other site to exist unhindered (whether or not we want it to). Ddcorkum (talk) 22:11, 7 November 2010 (UTC)
Okay, then I think you failed to recognize that none of the followups attempted to disagree with your suggestion. We agree with you. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 3:36 PM PST 7 Nov 2010
I do admit to being curious why you saw the need to remind us of proper netiquette. I'm not sure what you may be thinking, but I wish to remind you that you're not dealing with the typical Internet pond scum here. We know damn well that vandalism is not acceptable. The instances I mentioned about people vandalizing my user pages? It had been because I had reverted vandalism elsewhere and they weren't all too thrilled about it. As I said, typical Internet pond scum.
As for vandalism on WoWWiki: The only way it would truly reflect on us is if one of us - someone who could be instantly identified as being a Wowpedian - were contributing to the vandalism on WoWWiki. As far as I know, no one here is that idiotic. Your concerns are noted, but ultimately unnecessary, in my opinion. And to be blunt, you will likely not get quite as intelligent responses as these from whatever detritus that remains on WoWWiki. --IconSmall Deathwing.gif Joshmaul, Loremaster of Chaos (Leave a Message) 08:09, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
That's a bit harsh. There are still some good people contributing to WoWWiki, I'm sure, but I suspect the vandals may drive them away over time. --Gengar orange 22x22.png Fandyllic (talk · contribs) 9:47 AM PST 11 Nov 2010
Joshmaul, the post I made was after a member if this community vandalised WoWWiki by using a bot to perform thousands of edits which placed a banner at the top of each page pointing to the equivalent page on Wowpedia. As such, I feel my concerns (at the time they were noted) were very necessary. And as Fandyllic pointed out, your description of contributers to WoWWiki (post-fork) is not fair. They are not "Internet pond scum", they are volunteer contributers to a wiki community. Just like us. Ddcorkum (talk) 17:46, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
I think you mistook him Ddcorkum: I do believe he was calling the ppl who were doing the vandalizing "internet pond scum" and not the actual valid contributors themselves. At most I'd consider the users still editing Wowwiki 'uninformed' or 'editing an already sinking ship', but I highly doubt anyone would call actual contributors to wowwiki post-fork (many who have reclaimed their account here) 'internet pond scum'. g0urra's hand has been slapped for the bot incident, wikia's reverted most of the edits, and its over. We still monitor wowwiki, with good reason: A user yesterday stole the entire page for [Tripping the Rifts] from wowpedia and put it up on wowwiki without citing us. Ressy (talk) 17:55, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
Rest assured, I consider the incident closed. I simply am responding to Joshmaul saying "why are you doing this, its not like any of us did/would-do anything". Well, one of us did, back when this thread was made. I don't think it is good to pretend that nothing happened, as we can never learn from our mistakes that way. That said, I havn't mentioned Gourra by name up till this point because I have no grudge against him. It was frankly only a matter of time before someone did something similar to what he did. Hell, he was probably doing a service to the "uninformed" who saw those banners and learned from it that they were reading out of date content. But it doesn't make it right, and that's why this thread was made when it was (which is the answer to Joshmaul's question). Ddcorkum (talk) 18:07, 11 November 2010 (UTC)
