Gilthares Firebough is an elf located in Northwatch Hold in the Southern Barrens. He was a deckhand on a moonshine transport between Ratchet and Booty Bay. The ship was sunk by Theramore zealots and Firebough, the only survivor, was captured and imprisoned in a tower at Northwatch Hold. He is a member of the Thalo'dan Privateers.
Quests[]
[20] Free From the Hold He was friendly towards the Horde and the Alliance, although once the escort quest was started he became neutral to the Alliance—thus allowing Alliance players to attack and kill him.
Cataclysm[]
Though commonly believed to be missing as of Cataclysm, Gilthares was still very much present in Northwatch. The tower that once housed him had been damaged in-game, and due to there being no damaged mage tower models, the model had been swapped to that of a damaged scout tower. This caused various issues with his placement, causing him to appear on the floor under the tower. Gilthares could be tracked by hunters/druids using Track Humanoids, as well as targeted by typing/target Gilthares. He serves no purpose and the quest he once offered has been removed, his presence may have just been an oversight when developers were remodeling Northwatch.
This has since been fixed and is seen sitting in the tower.

It is interesting to note that, though apparently a high elf and not a blood elf, he wore an abundance of red, which is a practice usually avoided by high elves. The reason for this may have been because he is not a part of the Alliance, and therefore not afraid of wearing red clothes. He also expressed open hostility to the Alliance due to his enslavement.
Prior to The Burning Crusade, blood elven and high elven NPCs were distinguished by two different models, Gilthares used that of the blood elven model. However with the expansion, his model was updated but used the high elven skin rather than the blood elven one. It is possibly an over sight by the developers (as in the case of Astromancer Darnarian), although the same model is now used by Quel'dorei Wraiths, which are high elf ghosts in the Ghostlands. Given that the leader of his organization is a high elf as well and that his clothing could have just been intended to be red, Gilthares is likely a high elf.
