Spirit of Competition

Spirit of Competition.

The Gold Medallion teaches you how to summon the Spirit of Competition, a small Chinese dragon companion. It was available during the Spirit of Competition event, which coincided with the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Player characters had a chance to receive the Gold Medallion in their mailboxes after each battleground win. Each character on an account was eligible to receive one medallion.

Owning this pet from this item rewarded the Achievement general [Spirit of Competition] achievement.

Notes and trivia[]

  • During the event there were numerous observations about the difficulty and ease of winning this item. In hindsight, it's been theorized that Gold Medallions were distributed as a random loot roll among the battleground winners who did not yet have it, rather than a per individual fixed chance to receive it. Receiving this item from a win in Warsong Gulch appeared to be easier than other battlegrounds (a smaller battleground meant fewer people rolling), and that the odds seemed to improve as the Spirit of Competition event progressed (as people won the item and stopped being eligible to roll, the average number of players rolling in each match grew smaller).
  • The Spirit of Competition somewhat resembles a cloud serpent, but only because they have the same real-world inspiration. Cloud serpents were introduced 4 years after this pet.
