Gorefiend is a boss in the Hellfire Citadel of Tanaan Jungle. Gorefiend is the last boss of the lower-wing of Hellfire Citadel and is a hectic fight that involves players being sucked into the demon's stomach and fighting the various souls Teron'gor has consumed and corrupted during his time in Auchindoun.

Background[]

Main article: Teron'gor

Adventure Guide[]

Falling into the heart of the mausoleum Auchindoun, the Shadow Council lieutenant Teron'gor gorged upon hundreds of draenei souls, becoming a bloated abomination in the process. More than just an orc now, Teron'gor gave up his old name and has taken a new one: Gorefiend.

Designer notes[]

We laid the groundwork for this encounter in Auchindoun, further reinforcing the rule that if you don’t actually see a boss die, it’s quite possible that you haven’t seen the last of them. Of course, the inverse of that rule isn’t necessarily true—Kael’thas says “hello.” In any case, Gorefiend hearkens back to encounters like C'Thun and Yogg-Saron, where players are devoured and must overcome spirits inside the stomach of the bloated monstrosity to prevent them from escaping to attack the raid.

Overview[]

Gorefiend devours the spirits of players who otherwise would have suffered fatal damage. When consumed, players enter Gorefiend's stomach, which is full of hostile Trapped Souls that attempt to escape into the outside world to attack the raid. While inside Gorefiend's stomach, players can damage these Souls to weaken or defeat them before they escape. Each Soul that is released or slain reduces Gorefiend's energy. When Gorefiend reaches zero energy he begins a Feast of Souls, which recharges him to begin his assault anew.

Dps icon Damage Dealers[]

  • Shadow of Death targets random players. When slain, use the opportunity to damage Trapped Souls within Gorefiend's stomach.
  • If afflicted with Touch of Doom, move as far away from other players as possible.
  • Move quickly towards the immobilized target if afflicted with Shared Fate.
  • Run into an Unstable Soul when Gorefiend performs Feast of Souls.

Healer icon Healers[]

  • Shadow of Death targets random players. When slain, fully heal Tortured Essences to free them from Gorefiend's power.
  • If afflicted with Touch of Doom, move as far away from other players as possible.
  • Move quickly towards the immobilized target if afflicted with Shared Fate.

Tank icon Tanks[]

  • Shadow of Death targets random players. When slain, tank the Enraged Spirit within Gorefiend's stomach.
  • Avoid the Enraged Spirit's Fel Fury.
  • At 70% life, the Enraged Spirit escapes from the stomach and becomes a powerful Gorebound Spirit that must be tanked.
  • When Gorefiend reaches 0 energy he begins a Feast of Souls.

Abilities[]

  • Devourer of Souls Important — Players who are killed are not slain outright. Instead, Gorefiend devours their souls, placing them in his stomach where they will be Digested. Players who have recently been consumed are afflicted with Gorefiend's Corruption and if they die again their soul is lost.
    • Corrupted Soul — When a player is slain a fragment of their soul is left behind and deeply corrupted by Gorefiend. The result is a being of pure malice, bent on consuming the living. Only when this fragment is destroyed will the player who was consumed be freed from Gorefiend's stomach.
      • Spell shadow shadesofdarkness Resisting — After 30 sec. the player tied to this soul will be Digested.
    • Spell shadow deathcoil Digest Deadly — Gorefiend consumes anyone who spends 40 sec inside his stomach, inflicting 1500000 Shadow damage.
    • Ability bossgorefiend gorefiendscorruption Gorefiend's Corruption — Exposure to Gorefiend has taxed the soul of the player and they can no longer be consumed upon death. In Mythic difficulty Gorefiend's Corruption is only removed when a player collapses an Unstable Soul.
  • Spell fire twilightnova Gathering Darkness — Inflicts 150000 Shadow damage to all enemies. This attack is only used by Gorefiend whenever he is not actively engaged in melee combat.
  • Spell arcane prismaticcloak Shadow of Death Deadly Important — The shadow of death looms. Kills the target after 5 sec.
  • Ability bossgorefiend touchofdoom Touch of Doom — Inflicts up to 162000 Shadow damage to all allies after 8 sec. Allies farther from the detonation take less damage. The explosion also forms a Doom Well at the feet of the afflicted player.
    • Ability warlock soulsiphon Doom Well — Inflicts 105750 Shadow damage every 1.5 sec while standing within the zone.
  • Ability bossgorefiend touchofdoom Touch of Doom — Inflicts up to 162000 Shadow damage to all allies after 8 sec. Allies farther from the detonation take less damage.
  • Ability warlock soullink Shared Fate — Gorefiend twists the soul of a player, rooting that target and binding them to 2 other players. This effect inflicts 51750 Shadow damage to all targets every 2 sec until all afflicted players are within 6 yards of the rooted player. All afflicted players take 275000 Shadow damage if the effect is not canceled within 10 sec.
  • Spell fire twilightfire Surging Shadows — Causes each player to emit a pulse of shadowy magic that inflicts 56181 to 59064 Shadow damage to all allies within 5 yards.
  • Spell shadow mindtwisting Crushing Darkness — Creates a series of explosions that inflict 196218 to 206282 Shadow damage to all enemies within 4 yds of the impact.
  • Spell misc zandalari council soulswap Feast of Souls — Gorefiend regenerates energy over 1 min., inflicting 43875 to 46125 Shadow damage every 2 sec. In addition, Unstable Souls are pulled towards Gorefiend. Each soul that reaches Gorefiend increases his energy by 10. While consuming souls Gorefiend's defenses are lowered, increasing damage taken by 100%. Upon reaching 100 energy, Gorefiend begins his assault once more.
    • Spell shadow blackplague Unstable Soul — Touching an Unstable Soul causes it to collapse inflicting 53625 to 56375 Shadow damage to all players and an additional 13125 to 21875 Shadow damage to players within 10 yds. of the detonation. In Mythic difficulty Gorefiend's Corruption is only removed when a player collapses an Unstable Soul.

Trapped Souls[]

  • Shadowy Construct Damage Dealer Alert — The twisted remains of a soul walk towards the center of Gorefiend's stomach before being released and empowered.
    • Ability hunter killcommand Gorefiend's Command — The caster's movement speed increases by 25% and becomes immune to crowd control effects.
  • Tortured Essence Healer Alert — A draenei spirit bound to Gorefiend's will. The spirit moves towards the center of the stomach where it will be fully corrupted and released. Healing the spirit to full releases it from Gorefiend's grasp.
    • Ability hunter killcommand Gorefiend's Command — The caster's movement speed increases by 25% and becomes immune to crowd control effects.

    • Ability warrior titansgrip Slam — At 70% life the Enraged Spirit slams the ground inflicting 73125 to 76875 Physical damage and knocking back all players within 10 yards of the caster before running to exit Gorefiend's stomach.
    • Spell shadow ragingscream Gorebound Fortitude — Reduces damage taken by 90%.

Unleashed Souls[]

  • Gorebound Construct
    • Spell shadow animatedead Hunger for Life Deadly — The Gorebound Construct fixates upon a random player and hungrily moves towards them, increasing in speed over time. Upon reaching the target the construct inflicts 3000000 Shadow damage to all enemies within 10 yds. before crumpling into dust.
  • Gorebound Essence
    • Spell shadow shadowbolt Spirit Volley — Inflicts 23400 to 24600 Shadow damage to all players reducing their movement speed by 50% for 2 sec. Each cast increases the damage of Spirit Volley by 20%.
  • Gorebound Spirit Tank Alert
    • Spell fire felimmolation Fel Flames Tank Alert — Each melee attack wraps the target in flames inflicting 14237 Fire damage every 1 sec. for 4 sec. This ability stacks.
    • Ability fomor boss shout Bellowing Shout Interruptible — Increases Physical damage done by 300% for 10 sec.
    • Spell nature shamanrage Raging Charge — The caster charges towards their primary target inflicting 243750 to 256250 Physical damage.

Strategy[]

Gorefiend requires 2 tanks as he will pull one into the stomach to tank the Gorebound Spirit, and one outside to continue tanking the boss. Save Spell nature bloodlust [Bloodlust] for the first Feast of Souls phase as that will be when the raid can do the most damage will minimal distractions.

Aside from the adds (see below), players who are outside the stomach need to worry about two mechanics: Touch of Doom and Crushing Darkness. Crushing Darkness creates a series of easily-spotted swirls on the ground in a spiral pattern that will explode and cause shadow-damage in a few seconds, simply stay away from them. Gorefiend will cast Touch of Doom on several random non-tank players. After the debuff expires, the affected players will drop a Doom Well (a large pool that causes Shadow damage) at their feet. These pools slowly but surely expand over time, making it very important for the affected players to react quickly and drop the pools at the edge of the room. Quick players can even drop pools on top of other ones, allowing for even more room.

Soon after the battle begins, several players will be afflicted by Shadow of Death, pulling them inside Gorefiend's stomach. Those within the stomach have 40 seconds to do as much damage to Shadowy adds as possible before going to the center of the room to escape before Gorefiend Digests them, killing them instantly. The adds that will attack the raid once they get outside (Shadowy Constructs, Essences, and one Enraged Spirit) move slowly from the edge of the room to the center and can be slowed and stunned (unless they are Essences).

The Enraged Spirit (ghostly fel orc) takes priority: Avoid the Felfury it places on the ground, take it down to 50% and it will immediately run out, at which point the tank inside the stomach must immediately exit. The outside tank will take the now-Gorebound Spirit and tank it alongside Gorefiend, swapping with the other tank when stacks of Fel Flames the Spirit inflicts gets too high (typically 4-5 stacks).

Shadowy Constructs are ghostly skeletons and do not attack while in the stomach, so each of the DPS should have no trouble taking several of them down before they exit the stomach (remember to stun and slow). Once they exit, they become Gorebound Constructs and will fixate on a non-tank player, run towards them, and explode on contact for fatal damage. The constructs can no longer be stunned, only slowed, and must be killed before they reach their target.

Shadowy Essences are draenei spirits that must be healed by a healer in the stomach to be stopped, similar to the corrupted oozes in the Immerseus fight. As they are counted as friendly in the stomach, they cannot be slowed or stunned. Once they escape, they become hostile Gorebound Essences that will fire volleys of shadow bolts that will slow those hit and cause raid-wide damage.

As the fight progresses, Gorefiend's energy meter will decrease. Once it reaches zero, Gorefiend will enter his Feast of Souls phase. He will not attack, will draw Unstable Souls from the opposite side of the room toward him, will cause massive raid-wide damage over time, and take 100% increased damage from all sources. Finish off any remaining adds, have anyone still in the stomach come out, and have the DPS and healers stack-up to make healing easier and blow all DPS cooldowns including Bloodlust. Meanwhile, the tanks will be blocking the Unstable Souls from reaching the boss by simply running into them, which keeps him from regenerating energy faster. Have one tank take the left and one the right side of the room. Once the boss reaches 100 energy, he will wipe threat and resume attacking the raid. A tank should be in position before then to keep the stacked DPS or healers from getting hit. Spread out and repeat until the next feast phase.

Overall, the raid must remember that adds always take priority as DPS will not be doing much damage to Gorefiend until the feast phase. Doomwells must be managed well due to how much movement will be happening when the adds come out due to people running away from Gorebound Constructs. Keep the focus on the mechanics and adds of the fight instead of the boss and the raid should be fine.
