Hand of Protection is a paladin spell that protects the target from all physical attacks for 10 seconds, but also prevents from them using physical attacks or abilities for that time. Players may only have one Hand on them per paladin at any time. Hand of Protection also places the 1 minute Forbearance debuff on the target, and cannot be used on targets with Forbearance.

  • Using Hand of Protection, [Divine Shield], or [Lay on Hands] will afflict the protected target with the [Forbearance] debuff, which lasts one minute and prevents any of those three abilities from being used again on that target while it is active.
  • This does not protect the target from spell damage. This should not be used as a last minute protection if the target is being hit by spells (such as anyone running from a Mage in PvP) - use [Divine Shield] to prevent spell damage.
  • Similarly, it does not prevent the target from using spells and non-physical attacks and abilities. This makes it a far more useful ability for use upon ranged, caster or hybrid types.
  • Although the target is protected from physical attacks, they are not protected from many physical abilities such as [Kick], [Thunder Clap] and [Pummel]. Casters can still be interrupted while protected.
  • The paladin ability [Judgment] is considered to be a physical ability and so cannot be used while protected.
  • Unlike Divine Shield, this does not remove all preexisting debuffs (only physical like [Hamstring]), so it will not entirely double as a [Hand of Freedom].
  • As a magical buff, Hand of Protection can be dispelled.
  • Protected targets lose all aggro while under its duration. This can make it dangerous when used upon a tank, as mobs will immediately switch to the next target on their lists.
  • Protected targets afflicted with a rogue's [Deadly Poison] can still be damaged by the rogue's [Envenom], as it is considered Nature damage and not physical. While rare, this can interrupt bandaging or potentially finish extremely low-health targets.
  • This does protect you from fall and fatigue damage.
  • As of Patch 3.0.2 this ability replaces the former [Blessing of Protection] and works in the same way, but uses the Hand system to prevent conflicts with Blessings.
  • Despite being renamed to Hand of Protection, it's still sometimes referred to by the old blessing name, or shortened to BoP and referred to as "Bopping".

Tips & tricks

  • Tanking paladins can use this as a last resort method of aggro management when a melee dps class is unable to control their own aggro, as the player will be unable to perform melee actions through the shield. The threat reduction only lasts for the duration of the hand however, so a tanking paladin needs to make sure they are able to generate enough threat to keep aggro when the hand expires.

  • Hand of Protection is a basic Paladin spell in Hearthstone. The flavor text reads: "This spell has been renamed so many times, even paladins don’t know what it should be called anymore."
