Uther's memories of this Prince Arthas haunt him deeply. He is the reason Uther's soul was fragmented, why Devos fell the way she did.

The pain in these memories is palpable.

We have to dig deeper. Uther must face the source of this darkness.

Arthas about to become a paladin

Back into the Soul Mirror to enter the Cathedral of Light in Stormwind City. While the events of the quest occur, the present-day Uther will sometimes speak offscreen to the kyrian near him in Bastion. In the transcript below, Uther's quotes are marked (Present) or (Past) to distinguish between this Uther and the one in the past.

Uther the Lightbringer says: Feeling nervous, Arthas? (Past)

Uther the Lightbringer says: This is the day Arthas became a paladin. I remember it well... (Present)

Arthas Menethil says: Honestly? Yes. I see your devotion to the Light and feel doubt cloud my heart.

Arthas Menethil says: You've taught me so much, Uther... but I sometimes wonder if I'm truly meant to walk this path.

Uther the Lightbringer says: Great expectations await you, lad. I have faith that you will exceed them all. (Past)

Uther the Lightbringer says: But for now, let's spar. That should clear your mind.

Arthas Menethil says: Hah. It always does.

The ghosts of Tereneas Menethil, Gavinrad the Dire, and others

Start combat:

Uther the Lightbringer says: No... I should have listened to him. Why didn't I listen? (Present)

Polemarch Adrestes says: You sought to comfort a troubled student. None can fault you for such an act.

A group of ghosts appear, circling the room, including Gavinrad the Dire, Terenas Menethil, some generic Silver Hand Paladins, Stratholme Citizens, and Andorhal Citizens.

Uther the Lightbringer says: Tell that to all of the innocents he slaughtered. I set him on that path!

Kleia says: You guided him on the path of justice. He is the one who strayed from it.

Uther the Lightbringer says: May the Light forgive me.

Knock Arthas down to 40% health, and Uther will be overcome by another Fugue State as the ghosts close in around him, ending the memory. Back at the Eonian Archives, Uther has recovered and is now standing upright with his previous gossip text back:

This pain, deep in my soul... I am ready for it to end.
