Hellfire Assault is the first boss encounter in the Hellfire Citadel in Tanaan Jungle. The fight requires the raid to turn the Iron Horde's siege weaponry against the front gates to gain entry to the Citadel, while combating the Iron Horde that come forward to defend their stronghold.

Background[]

Adventure Guide[]

With the aid of the mercenary Blackfuse company, the Iron Horde constructed devastating siege machinery in the shadow of Hellfire Citadel, to be used in the eventual assault upon Azeroth's capitals. With the tanks now retrofitted to use Fel energy, Siegemaster Mar'tak awaits Gul'dan's command to begin the assault.

Designer notes[]

Like Spoils of Pandaria in Siege of Orgrimmar, this is a raid “boss” without a single named boss that must be defeated. Players must withstand waves of attackers, salvaging ammunition from their fallen vehicles, and using that ammunition to power the massive Hellfire Cannons that stand in the courtyard. Victory is achieved by breaching the gates of the Citadel.

Overview[]

Players attempt to turn the massive Hellfire Cannons in the Citadel's courtyard against the mighty gate of the Citadel, while fending off Siegemaster Mar'tak and her militarized force. Throughout the encounter, waves of enemies rush at the players, periodically accompanied by huge siege weapons that seek to destroy the Cannons and the players defending them. Destroying these siege weapons allows players to salvage Felfire Munitions, which may be brought to the Hellfire Cannon, allowing it to continuously fire Hellfire Rounds at the Reinforced Hellfire Door. Once players successfully breach the Reinforced Hellfire Door, Siegemaster Mar'tak's forces retreat into the Citadel.

Dps icon Damage Dealers[]

  • Quickly defeat Gorebound Felcasters after they use Metamorphosis to become a Gorebound Terror.
  • Defeat Fel-Infused Siege Weapons to keep the Hellfire Cannons alive.

Healer icon Healers[]

  • Felfire Volley inflicts high raid-wide damage after Metamorphosis.

Tank icon Tanks[]

  • Be ready to grab the attention of any Hellfire Reinforcements.
  • Slam stacks increase Physical damage taken, so be wary when tanking multiple enemies and a Hulking Berserker.

Abilities[]

  • Hellfire Cannon Important — Upon starting the encounter, players commandeer both Hellfire Cannons. Siegemaster Mar'tak's forces continually pour forth from Hellfire Citadel to prevent players from capitalizing on possession of these cannons. Based on available Felfire Munition reserves, the Hellfire Cannon will continuously fire at the Reinforced Hellfire Door.
    • Felfire Munitions — Felfire-Imbued Siege Vehicles carry Felfire Munitions into battle. Upon death, the Felfire Munitions drop to the ground, allowing a player to pick it up. The Felfire Munitions despawn if not picked up within 10 min. Upon being picked up, a player gains Haste, increasing movement speed by 100% for 9 sec. While being carried, the Felfire Munitions inflicts 35000 Fire damage every second.

Strategy[]

This fight consists of safeguarding the Hellfire Cannons from the enemy adds and vehicles until the cannons can destroy the gate, at which point the fel orcs retreat and the fight ends. The group should have two tanks, one for each side that the fel orc adds come down to. The group should also have one or two designated carriers of the Hellfire Munitions who can quickly bring them to the cannons, speeding up the destruction of the gate.

The fight begins by fighting Siegemaster Mar'tak, a sort of miniboss. The group can use Spell nature bloodlust [Bloodlust] here because Mar'tak must be forced to retreat as soon as possible due to her giving a stacking damage buff to all enemy adds. She uses a large Shockwave ability, which players need to dodge, and Howling Axe, which ranged players should spread out 8-yards for. At 50% she will retreat and adds will continue to be sent out at regular intervals until the fight ends. Among the adds, the Gorebound Felcasters are the most dangerous as, when they reach low health, they will turn into Gorebound Terrors and cast Felfire Volley very quickly and cannot be interrupted. DPS should try to focus Felcasters down individually since multiple Terrors being up at the same time can prove too much for the healers to heal through. Hulking Berserkers are next on the kill order, as they place a stacking debuff on the tanks that makes them take more damage. This damage is negligible at first, only really hurting the tanks when multiple berserkers are up at once. The Contracted Engineers use shock-pulse to stun random players. This should be interrupted by the DPS. Iron Dragoons can easily be AOE'd down and have no abilities.

The Felfire-Imbuded Siege Vehicles are at the top of the kill order as they cannot be tanked and most of them will head straight for the cannons, making them the biggest threat to success. Flameblechers shoot felfire in large areas and are difficult to dodge, but will usually target the players instead of the cannons. Its attacks are denoted by large green circles. Felfire Artilleries rush forward in front of the cannons and start firing on it, first spawning to the right, then switching to spawning on the left and back again as the fight continues. As they usually stand away from where the adds spawn, use DBM to know when they are going to spawn and move dps into position beforehand to ensure the least amount of damage as possible is taken by your cannons. Crushers are deadliest. They have a spinning drill on their front which will immediately kill players in its way and shoot fire in random directions. Melee DPS must stay to the side or behind it while dodging the flames and the drill. After each of these vehicles are destroyed, they will drop Felfire Munitions which must be taken to your cannons to increase their damage against the gate.

Overall, this is the simplest fight in Hellfire Citadel. If the group can kill the vehicles quickly enough and manage to have only one Gorebound Terror up at a time, they should have no problem beating this fight.
