“Listen to me, lad, and I'll teach you everything you'll ever need to know.”
Hemet Nesingwary is a dwarven game hunter seen in Nagrand, Sholazar Basin, Valley of the Four Winds, alternate Nagrand, Highmountain, and Zuldazar. Considered the greatest hunter on Azeroth, he led safaris to hunt the wildlife of Azeroth and beyond, and is the author of The Green Hills of Stranglethorn. He is generally to be found in the wild, camped out with a group of fellow hunters, surrounded by a variety of grizzly trophies collected from the native game of the area. Nesingwary and his cohorts tutor adventurers on the hunting and trapping of wild creatures.
Hemet fought in many battles alongside Ajeck Rouack's father, and has been described by his servant Barnil Stonepot as a war hero of the Alliance.[4] Nesingwary is the father of Hemet Nesingwary Jr., who has taken over some of his father's duties in Stranglethorn, in order to allow him to focus on new and even more exotic game in newly discovered lands.
By the time of the expedition to the Dragon Isles, Hemet has retired and now spends his golden years as a cart driver.
History[]
Legends: The Thrill of the Hunt[]
Hemet was hired by the night elves of Nighthaven to track down a crazy furbolg that was terrorizing the elves. He chased him into Winterspring where he almost caught him not for the interference of Creedy's hunters. The furbolg escaped but one of the hunters recognized him to be the most famous hunter. They told him they were hunting a fox and Hemet joined them. After they found the animal's tracks, he immediately realized they were not after a fox and left them. He went after the tracks only to be attacked by a large cat, who turned out to be Teleena, a night elf druid. She explained that her nightsaber mount, Isis, had been killed by Creedy's group, who were bounty hunters. Isis had just given birth to three cubs which the bounty hunters intended to poach; their markings, which would fade as they got older, made their hides valuable to the unscrupulous that were willing to pay high prices for them.
Outraged that the bounty hunters would slaughter young animals that had no way or chance to defend themselves, Hemet immediately decided to help Teleena and her three cubs. They successfully escaped Creedy but the cruel hunter was able to shoot Teleena. Hemet took her to a nearby cave and managed to remove the bullet, but she later succumbed to her wound, asking him to take care of the three cubs before she died.
Nesingwary began with constructing traps and fashioned a bow and arrows from the bush for silent takedowns, killing Creedy's hunters one by one. Hemet managed to pull Creedy into a trap and bound him to a tree. The furbolg Hemet had been hunting appeared and he allowed it to kill Creedy before shooting it. Hemet then collected Teleena's body, the cubs, and the furbolg and turned them over to her people.
He would once visit The Blue Recluse and recounted his story to Flint Broadshot and his cronies, having learned the true meaning of an honorable kill and the "thrill of the hunt". He then claimed the corpse of a tiger the cowardly Flint had trapped before shooting it, leaving Stormwind to bury the animal out in the wild.[5]
World of Warcraft[]
At some point, Hemet was in battlefields in Lordaeron.[6]
Hemet also visited Kravel Koalbeard Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles and ordered ammunition from him.[7] He also arrived to Desolace in Kalimdor and befriended the tauren Roon Wildmane, spending several days hunting beasts. When he left for Stranglethorn, Roon vowed to invite him back.[8]
Hemet Nesingwary was stationed in Nesingwary's Expedition in Stranglethorn Vale and directed young adventurers to hunt local game. He later left for Outland to hunt bigger game. The Stranglethorn Vale quests he used to offer are now given by his son Hemet Nesingwary Jr.
The Burning Crusade[]
With the opening of the Dark Portal, Hemet Nesingwary saw this as an opportunity to hunt new prey. Hemet traveled to Nagrand where set up camp and welcomed everyone who wished to join the hunt. His choice of target there appeared to be the clefthoof and Banthar is their champion. His ultimate target was Tusker.
Wrath of the Lich King[]
During the war against the Lich King, Hemet Nesingwary returned to Azeroth, moving his operations to the Nesingwary Base Camp, located in Sholazar Basin in western Northrend. The camp here is basically where his ship ended up after crashing through the river's entrance from the North Sea, thinking the Seabreach Flow might be a good river inland and finding too late he was wrong.[9]
A new organization known as D.E.H.T.A. gives players quests to combat the game hunter's butchery, and even go up against Hemet's hunters.[10]
He became respected by the Frenzyhearts, and the wolvar orphan Kekek wanted to see him during Children's Week. Hemet advised him to read The Green Hills of Stranglethorn if he wanted to hunt with him.[11]
After the war against the Lich King, Hemet and the Nesingwary's Safari moved on to other hunting grounds.[9]
Cataclysm[]
During the Cataclysm, Hemet appeared at Mount Hyjal as one of many well-known characters during the quest [35 Daily] The Protectors of Hyjal.
Mists of Pandaria[]
In Pandaria, Hemet and his son made an appearance at Nesingwary's Safari near the south-west of the Valley of the Four Winds. They traveled here with a small group, having arrived by hot air balloon, The Killem' Jaro (and not crashing for a change). After he had valley's wildlife hunted, his son wanted to step out of his father's shadow by hunting his own game hunt. Nevertheless, Hemet had to rescue Junior from the spell of Torjar's Bane.[12]
Warlords of Draenor[]
During the war in Draenor, the Alliance and Horde invited Hemet to come in Nagrand to hunt big game. However, when he got here, they instead told him to hunt the Warsong wolves. This made Hemet disappointed, as he wanted to hunt big game, and felt the domesticated wolves weren't worth the effort. He set up a "camp" in eastern Nagrand, just north of Hallvalor, and began drinking heavily. If an adventurer drinks with him, Hemet may sometimes appear in their garrison.
By using [Nesingwary's Lost Horn] in Ashran, Hemet's pets - Gibby, Kroshik, Stompy, a silkwing, ironhide bull, direhorn and cypress condor - will begin a stampede towards the enemy faction's base.
Legion[]
This section is a lore stub. |
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Nesingwary was up to his tricks again, this time hunting big game in central Highmountain. He also served as a champion for the Unseen Path in Trueshot Lodge.
Spring Balloon Festival[]
During the Spring Balloon Festival, adventurers can visit Hemet Nesingwary in Nesingwary's Retreat for a ride across Highmountain in The Killem' Jaro.
Battle for Azeroth[]
At the time of the Fourth War, Hemet Nesingwary was found in Nesingwary's Trek in Zuldazar on Zandalar, where he warmly greeted adventurers who've come to join the hunt.[13] He would subsequently directed them killing Wildtusk, in order to put the riverbeast bull out of its misery.[14] Sometime later he left the Trek in order to carry his own hunt, only to find himself hunted and captured by Headhunter Jo.[15] However rather than the target of Jo's hunt, Nesingwary found himself being used as bait for the adventurers. He barely had time to warn them before Jo attacked, and to his relief, was slain. He subsequently thanked them for freeing him and admitting to being embarrassed by the situation.[16]
He also apparently visited Kul Tiras as his campfire can be found in Stormsong Valley.
Exploring Azeroth[]
Following the war against the Jailer, the brothers Bronzebeard visited the former grounds of the Nesingwary Base Camp in Sholazar Basin, thinking to see if the jungle had fully reclaimed it. However, they were surprised to find tents and Hemet Nesingwary himself. The greatest hunter of Azeroth explained that he'd been passing through and wanted to take a look at Sholazar for a few days. He was jolly about showing us what bits of rotted wood remained of the ship he crashed in here so many years ago, and all of them did a bit of target shooting for fun in the camp.[9]
Dragonflight[]
At an unknown point in time, Hemet decided to retire. However, after learning about the Dragonscale Expedition to the Dragon Isles, he decided to join in for a bit of fun. He was accompanied by his son, who was stationed at Camp Nowhere, while Hemet himself gave caravan rides, which serve as a scenic taxi service, throughout the Azure Span on his wagon, pulled by Tiny and Junior.

Keep a sharp eye, <class>. You never know when some beastie is stalking you instead of the other way around.
Hemet Nesingwary, what are you doing here in Outland?
- Listen lad. I left the expedition in the capable hands of me son, Junior. When you've stalked the finest game in all of Azeroth you start to itch for something more.
- And have you seen the size of the beasties here?!
- I'm here hunting the most dangerous prey you'll ever lay your eyes on. I mean to bag myself Tusker and take her heart as my trophy!

Gossip[]
- At Camp Antonidas
You didn't think retirement would keep me out of the game, did you?
My eyes aren't what they used to be, and my hands are certainly less steady... but they can hold these reins!
This whole Dragonscale Expedition is quite the operation, and I've a mind to do my part!
As for the Azure Span, well... it reminds me of some of the best places I've ever been.
So you're not here to hunt?
- I've bagged enough trophies to last me ten lifetimes! Take Tiny and Junior here... Sure, I could put their heads on a wall as easy as pulling a pint of Dun Morogh stout, but it'd make my job as a wagon driver significantly harder!
- <Nesingwary laughs.>
- I suppose that makes me something of a conservationist!
Dialogue[]
- At Camp Antonidas
- Let's wait here a spell.
- Camp Antonidas! I hear there's magic in these ruins...
- We'll wait here a bit. Junior and Tiny need a break.
- Don't mind us! Just passing through.
- Heading out
- On the road again! Bound to Camp Nowhere.
- Iskaara here we come!
- Off we go to Rhonin's Shield! Keep your wits about you.
- Let's go check on Theron's Watch.
- Back to Camp Antonidas and a little bit of civilization!
- Speeding up
- Tally-ho!
- Giddy-up!
- Come on lads, show me what you've got!
- Arriving at camp Nowhere
- Camp Nowhere! Adventurers and explorers all.
- We'll be in Camp Antonidas in no time!
- Arriving at Iskaara
- Iskaara! A cold place with a warm welcome. Try not to slip.
- Arriving at Rhonin's Shield
- Rhonin's Shield! Keep your weapons handy. These parts are more dangerous than most...
- Arriving at Theron's Watch
- Theron's Watch! Now we're in the boondocks...
- Arriving at Camp Antonidas from the north
- Whoa, lads!
- Don't want to spook any mages.
- Let's wait here a spell.
- During the caravan ride
- My son Junior is back at Camp Nowhere.
- I told him I was joining the Dragonscale Expedition as a bit of fun, and he insisted on coming along.
- "Yer getting old dad, you need to slow down." Bah, humbug!
- Still, it's good to know he's waiting for me with a mug of ale and a leg of mutton.
- After his mum his passed, I got lost in the hunt and we drifted apart for... too long.
- He's a good son.
- Certainly the best an ol' dwarf like me could hope for!
- Tell me, <name>... do you ever suffer from nightmares?
- I don't.
- At night, when I close my eyes, I see the faces of every beast I've ever hunted. Waiting. Knowing that one day they'll get their second chance at ol' Nesingwary.
- And you know how that makes me feel?
- Content.
- They walk with me in life, and they'll accompany me in death.
- Predator and prey. Hunter and hunted. Life and death.
- That's the cycle.
- Hum de dum, three kittens on a drum...
- ... dancing all around while looking for their mum.
- Hoy tee tay, three hunters on their way...
- ... looking for some pelts and a solid lump of pay.
- Buh rah roh, look at Hemet go!
- Feed the hunters to some furbolgs, and let the kittens grow!
- You know, there was a time when people scoffed at the idea of a dwarf hunter.
- They said we were too short. That our guns and our gazes were too close to the ground.
- I've trained many young hunters who've put that stupid ol' myth to bed, but none more so than the gnome Addie Fizzlebog.
- Now there's a lass who knows her business!
- Whether with book or blunderbuss, she's pound for pound my equal in every way.
- I wonder what she's up to these days?
- Ah, the great outdoors! What a way to spend your days. A wind on your face and the sun at yer back.
- That being said, I don't miss the heat of Stranglethorn for a minute. Or the winds of Nagrand!
- This breezy climate makes my old bones sing!
- Now you might be thinking to yerself, "Hemet, why give up the hunt?", and I'll tell ya.
- It occurred to me that, somewhere between feeding opportunists to furbolgs in Winterspring and being strung up in the jungles of Zuldazar, I'd lost me way.
- To hunt for yerself, for the rush it gives, is a truly selfish thing. To hunt for others? 'Tis a thing of beauty.
- So to answer your question, I haven't given up hunting at all. I'm just more mindful of who I hunt for.
- And who I hunt with.
In Hearthstone[]
Hemet appears as a legendary card in the Goblins vs Gnomes expansion for Hearthstone. His flavor text reads: "It's hard to make a living as a hunter in a world where beasts instantly reappear minutes after you kill them."
He is also the fifth and penultimate boss that new players face in the game's initial tutorial. Since his legendary card was only first introduced in Goblins vs Gnomes, he was the last of the tutorial bosses to be added as a collectible minion card to the game.
Hemet reappears in the Journey to Un'Goro expansion in the form of Hemet, Jungle Hunter. His flavor text reads: "The goblin travel agency lost his luggage, but he's still having a great vacation!"
Notes and trivia[]
- Hemet claims to have fought against the Burning Legion at some point.[17] This was most likely during the Third War. Alternatively, it could have happened at any point after the war in areas inhabited by the demons.
- According to Muradin Bronzebeard, Hemet is a good bloke, quick with a joke and a story, and also a crack hand with guns. However, his brother Branns said of him that he's not exploring for knowledge but is a glory hound.[9]
- Before patch 2.0.1, Hemet Nesingwary could be found at Nesingwary's Expedition in Stranglethorn Vale. Now his son, Hemet Nesingwary Jr., looks after the camp.
- [Hemet Nesingwary's Bullet] can be fished up from the fountain in the version of Dalaran.
- He was initially stated to be involved in the events in Stranglethorn during patch 4.1 where players would track the elusive hunter.[18] This role was seemingly given to Grent Direhammer.
- Helga Nesingwary, daughter of Hemet, was originally planned to appear in Gorgrond in Warlords of Draenor. She would go insane and players would help her regain her sanity.[19]
- His name is an anagram of the author Ernest Hemingway; former World of Warcraft quest designer Jeffrey Kaplan, who created Hemet and the original [40] The Green Hills of Stranglethorn quest, is a huge Hemingway fan.[20] Hemingway was an avid hunter, fisherman, and safari traveler. The theme of the "Great White Hunter" is common in his books. The Green Hills of Stranglethorn is a parody of Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa, a nonfiction work describing his safari adventures. Additionally, the achievements for finishing Hemet's quests in Outland and Northrend ( [Hills Like White Elekk] and [The Snows of Northrend], respectively) reference two other Hemingway books: Hills Like White Elephants and The Snows of Kilimanjaro.
- Hemet is voiced by J.B. Blanc.
- The US PvE realm Server:Nesingwary US of the Emberstorm battlegroup is named after Hemet.
