The frost trap allows hunters to reposition themselves for a better shot... or, if the need arises, to run.[1]
FrostTrap

In World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game.

Frost Trap can be used to slow units multiple times since you can always lead the mob over the ice slick to easily reapply the snare. This makes kiting mobs, especially multiple mobs, in circles much easier.

Improvements

Talents

  • Ability ensnare [Entrapment] entraps targets who trigger frost trap, preventing them from moving for 2/3/4 sec.
  • Ability ensnare [Trap Mastery] increases the duration frost trap effects by 10/20/30%.
  • Resourcefulness reduces the mana cost of frost trap by 20/40/60% and the cooldown by 2/4/6 sec (3 ranks).
  • Ability hunter lockandload [Lock and Load] gives you a 33/66/100% chance when you trap a target with your frost trap to cause your next 2 arcane shot or explosive shot spells to trigger no cooldown cost no mana and consume no ammo.
  • Ability rogue feigndeath [Survival Tactics] reduces the change that frost trap will be resisted by 2/4%

Items

Tips & tricks

  • In group PvP this can be a great advantage to all of your team. Once activated its easy to notice graphic will let everyone on your team know it is possible to exploit it.
  • This trap will activate the lock and load talent when triggered giving the opportunity for some burst damage.

Strategy

  • The frost trap serves the same purpose as most other slowing effects. Generally use it when you're in an instance with mobs that have a tendency to run since sometimes runners will grab adds. This is often the case with Humanoid mobs.
  • The Hunter talent Ability ensnare [Entrapment] is apparently highly effective with Frost Trap. The rooting effect is tied to all mobs, meaning if one mob triggers the Ability ensnare [Entrapment] effect, all of them get rooted. This functionality has yet to be confirmed.
  • Frost trap can be used simply for mob pulling tests. When in a new area and not sure what you'll end up pulling, place a frost trap behind yourself. If the pull is too large, you can just run, the mobs run through the frost trap and make it much easier for you to escape. More of an additional security thing, especially if the group has ranged attackers or hunters that can cause slowing effects on yourself.
  • Something this can found useful for is when you know that there will be multiple adds (2-3) and need to focus more on a single add at a time. Place it where the tank will be, preventing the adds to make it as quickly to any cloth casters.
  • Frost trap can also be extremely useful in raids when the whole opposing team is charging to you and your team - you can freeze up to 20 players at once and give an opportunity to your teammates to move backwards safer when you and the other hunters are firing the frozen enemies.

Patch changes

  • Wrath-Logo-Small Patch 3.2.0 (2009-08-04): Will no longer "fizzle" on targets immune to snare effects, however Ability hunter lockandload [Lock and Load] will not succeed when using Frost Trap if the target is immune to snare effects.
  • Wrath-Logo-Small Patch 3.1.0 (2009-04-14): If the target who triggers Frost Trap is immune to its effect, the Frost Trap area effect will no longer be triggered.
