Master Kariel Winthalus was a blood elf loremaster. He fled the devastation of Quel'Thalas and ended up in the ruins of Eldre'Thalas, now known as Dire Maul. He was incinerated by Prince Tortheldrin while trying to gain knowledge from the Shen'dralar ancients found within. His librams indicate that he ventured to Kalimdor sometime after Prince Kael'thas pledged his allegiance to Illidan Stormrage. They make reference to both Kael and Illidan, praising both and thus making clear whom he serves.[1]
The character was eventually renamed to Telmius Dreamseeker.

Kariel may or may not have been affiliated with the other blood elf presence in Kalimdor, namely Lethtendris or Magus Rimtori and her cohorts. If they traveled to the continent together, it is uncertain what their overall design may have been. Perhaps a pursuit of kaldorei knowledge, as is evident in Kariel's choice to venture to Eldre'Thalas, and Rimtori's attaining of the Kaldorei Tome of Summoning.
