Lake Wintergrasp is a vast frozen lake and the largest body of water in all Northrend. This lake sits midway up and just west of the Dragonblight proper, and the ground there is low and even, and frozen solid. Although there is no knowledge whether the lake has always been frozen, it probably has, since Icecrown Glacier is right above it.[1]
Lake Wintergrasp effectively shields the Borean Tundra, which runs into the lake on the tundra's northern border, from the Dragonblight and Icecrown Glacier.[2] A pack of Icemist tauren settled on the western edge of the Dragonblight, on the lake's shore, in a settlement called Icemist Village.[1] Murlocs have settled the lake too.[3]
The surface is frozen solid, and you can walk across it and even drag a small cart if it is not too full. It is so blue it rivals a clear evening sky. Beneath that sheet of ice the water flows, so cold it will suck the heat from you in minutes. The tauren cut holes in the ice and spear the fish swimming beneath. It is bitterly cold near the water, and the wind can slice right through you.[1]
A river that cuts down through Icecrown Glacier empties into Lake Wintergrasp.[4]
In World of Warcraft[]
The oblong lake on the southern edge of Wintergrasp region may be what remains of Lake Wintergrasp. While the subzone is not named in-game, a concept map marks this as being Lake Wintergrasp. It seems that the former body of water has been drained in recent times leaving only a series of smaller lakes and streams.
There are also portal buffs called "Teleport to Lake Wintergrasp", obtained from a Portal to Wintergrasp in Dalaran.
The following debuff mentions "lake wintergrasp":
- Wintergrasp Water — The water of lake wintergrasp fries the circuits of all mechanical units.
