Rogues, like this blood elf, wear leather armor
Leather armor is generally worn by rogues, druids, monks and demon hunters throughout their full WoW "career". Leather armor provides more protection than cloth armor, but less than mail or plate armor. Prior to Legion, hunters and shaman also wore leather armor until they reached level 40.
If an armor is leather in-game it will be tagged with "leather". Leather armor can be crafted by the Leatherworking profession.
Patch changes[]
Patch 7.0.3 (2016-07-19): Hunters and shaman now begin with mail armor at level 1 instead of leather armor.
