Lireesa Windrunner was the Ranger-General of Silvermoon and wielder of Thas'dorah a few years prior to the First War. She was the mother of the four Windrunner siblings: the three sisters Alleria, Sylvanas, and Vereesa; and the brother Lirath.

Since the eldest child, Alleria, refused the mantle of Ranger-General, choosing instead to make more practical use of her abilities as a member of the Farstriders, Thas'dorah remained in Lireesa's hands until tragedy struck: at the onset of the Second War, she and many of her rangers were killed in a bloody attack by the Amani trolls, who had recently allied themselves with the invading Orcish Horde. Sylvanas became the new Ranger-General, but Alleria was the one who took up Thas'dorah.[1]

  • Lireesa was first given a name in Tales of the Hunt with Legion, a decade after being referenced in novels as Mother.
  • At some point, the Windrunner siblings' parents gave Alleria a necklace containing an emerald, a ruby, and a sapphire.[2][3] Alleria later melted down the necklace and gave the ruby and the sapphire to Vereesa and Sylvanas, respectively.[3][4]
  • There are conflicting statements regarding when Lireesa died.
  • The 2004 novel The Well of Eternity states that no one knew what happened to Liressa and Vereesa's father during the Scourge invasion of Quel'Thalas, and were thus presumed deceased.[5]
    • This probably just meant that nobody among the elves knew at the time, so Vereesa did not know: she was also kept in the dark about the fate of Sylvanas for some time as well.
  • In the 2007 prequel Tides of Darkness, Vereesa told Alleria that their parents should be in Silvermoon consulting with the elders, shortly before the burning of Quel'Thalas.[6]
    • At the same time in the same novel, Sylvanas was described as already being the Ranger-General of Quel'Thalas.
    • The artifact book "Tales of the Hunt" states that Sylvanas became Ranger-General following Lireesa's death in the Second War during a bloody attack.
    • In the short story Dark Mirror, Sylvanas was already established Ranger-General before the Second War had reached Quel'Thalas.[7]

Each was graced with a glowing, beautiful gem: an emerald, a ruby, and a sapphire. Verana gasped and looked up, clearly recognizing the stones. "Yes. They're from the necklace my parents gave me." Alleria confirmed.

Are Mother and Father safe?" "They're fine," Vereesa answered, disengaging and bending to retrieve her weapons. "Sylvanas is with a hunting party near the riverbank. As for Mother and Father, they should be in Silvermoon by now. They went to consult with the elders."
