Mercenaries (or mercs and sellswords) are soldiers for hire who fight for money or other recompenses instead of doing it for ideological interests.
Second War[]
During the Second War, many Steamwheedle Cartel mercenaries worked for the Horde.[1]
Danath Trollbane was a veteran mercenary captain in the Stromgarde Militia.[2]
During the early days of the Invasion of Draenor, Danath gathered all the mercenaries of Stormwind City together and marched them to fight at Nethergarde Keep.[3]
Third War[]
After the defeat of the Horde during the Second War, the goblins realized their mistake and left the faction. They are now a neutral force, making money off every side. Goblin mercenaries could be hired at special laboratories found all over Azeroth.
Many mercenaries could also be hired at mercenary camps, taverns and dragon roosts.
Prince Arthas infamously slaughtered all of his mercenaries after accusing them of destroying the ships of the 1st Legion.[4]
World of Warcraft[]
Some players also sell their services as mercenaries, asking other people for money before doing something for them like escorting them.
A Mercenary Mode exists for those wishing to enter unrated battlegrounds and Ashran as a member of the opposite faction.
Finally, adventurers can also hire mercenaries to protect them in the Krasarang Wilds at Proveditor Grantley and Ongrom Black Tooth.
Ranks of the Baradin's Wardens consist of mercenaries.[5]
