A mobile non-player entity; a computer-controlled enemy.

Often also referred to as beasts, monsters, non-player attackers, opponents, etc. The World of Warcraft-specific term is creep, coined by blizzard and first used in Warcraft III. (Zerg creep notwithstanding)

This is a term in wide-spread use in MMORPGs, but not so much in other games. The term originaly came from Multi User Dungeons (MUDs) which were text only MMORPGS. NPCs were defined in the code as either stationary "shopkeepers" or "mobiles".
