The Nightborne are an allied race affiliated with the Horde. Led by First Arcanist Thalyssra, the shal'dorei joined the Horde, in most part due to the bond of kinship they feel with the Blood elves.
Background
- Main article: Nightborne#History
After the death of Grand Magistrix Elisande and the end of the Third invasion of the Burning Legion, the shal'dorei wished to rejoin the world. After a harsh exchange between Thalyssra and Tyrande Whisperwind, and an offer of mutual friendship from Lady Liadrin, the shal'dorei leader decided that it would be best ally with the Horde, who share ideals similar to those of the nightborne.[1]
Battle for Azeroth
Character Creation Description
"The nightborne of Suramar spent millennia isolated behind an arcane barrier, slowly transformed by the magic of the Nightwell. These proud, noble elves now seek to reclaim their place in Azeroth."
In-Game Cutscene
Thalyssra: For ten-thousand years, Suramar was the only world we knew. As the ages passed, Azeroth changed around us... and fell into the Legion's grasp. To secure our people's future, you must help reclaim our place in Azeroth. Venture forth alongside new allies and show the world that the legacy of the nightborne is one of nobility... and strength.
Appearance
The nightborne look similar to night elves, but their overall appearance is darker. Their skin does not have the brighter skin tones of purple and pink that night elves do, instead having more pale skin with dark blue-purpleish tones. A shal'dorei's hair is also far less colorful than the kal'dorei's, having only white, gray, black, or very pale-blue hair colors. Glowing tattoos seem common among nightborne, though whether these are cosmetic or a result of the Nightwell's energy is unknown. Their eyes glow light-blue.
Unlocking
In order to unlock the ability to play as nightborne, players will need to have completed the achievement [Insurrection], be exalted with the Nightfallen, and have a level 110 Horde character. These requirements are account wide in that players do not have to earn all requirements on the same character or even an Horde character to unlock.

Notes & trivia
- Playable start at the Exalted stage with The Nightfallen reputation, with the main storyline of the [Good Suramaritan] achievement and the entirety of the [Insurrection] achievement completed. As a result of the latter, the Eye of Aman'thul is already placed within the Portrait Room in the Chamber of the Guardian in Dalaran, and Nightborne players can benefit from the [Gaze of Aman'Thul] immediately upon entering the Broken Isles.
- The modern Nightborne crest features the dusk lily as one of the main elements, no doubt added after Thalyssra's rise to power.
- During early testing, they had racial abilities allowing them to both masquerade as other nightborne, and dispel illusions.
- In the patch 7.3.5 PTR, the race's description was as such: "Isolated behind a protective barrier for ten-thousand years, the elves of Suramar grew increasingly dependent upon the arcane magic of the Nightwell. To protect this font of power, the leaders of the nightborne struck a bargain with the Burning Legion that plunged their kingdom into civil war. After fighting for freedom from their demonic masters, the nightborne seek allies to help them reclaim their place in the world."
