The Northsea Freebooters are a group of pirates that arrived in the Howling Fjord and set up a port at Scalawag Point. They have a severe dislike of the Southsea Freebooters,[2] from which they most likely branched off. The Northsea Freebooters are making up for being fewer in number by being worse criminals and murderers.
History[]
At some point just prior to the war against the Lich King, under the leadership of Jonah Sterling, the Northsea Freebooters stole artifacts from several graves - those from the vrykul's burial ground in Howling Fjord called Shield Hill, which brought the kvaldir to Northrend's shores, as they disturbed the spirits of the dead.[3]
For a time, they've been hiding out and dealing with troubles of their own, as the artifacts they've stolen have proven to be far more trouble than their apparent worth. According to "Silvermoon" Harry at Scalawag Point, everyone among the Northsea Freebooters who had come into touch with these artifacts has ended up dead, missing or both.[4] The Frozen Heart of Isuldof drove their captain Jonah Sterling insane, and the latter hid in a cavern near the pirate cove, having assigned a bear named Hozzer to guard the artifact.[5] The Staff of Storm's Fury had much the same effect on a crew member named Abdul the Insane, who held it on a ship at Iskaal.[6] The giant Sorlof was holding The Shield of the Aesirites, and the only way to retrieve it was to gain the trust of the now-undead crew of the Sister Mercy, once members of the Northsea Freebooters prior to their death, and help them defeat the giant.[7] As for the Ancient Armor of the Kvaldir, the armor was to be brought to Scalawag Point when the pirate ship was attacked by Forsaken. The Forsaken killed everyone aboard, looting everything of value, until they were killed in turn by the kvaldir.[8]
Later, the Northsea Freebooters were ordered by their captain to fight both the Alliance and the Horde expeditions whilst at the same time waging a war against the tuskarr to sell as slaves to other lands (even though they died just days after leaving their climate).[9] None of the tuskarr survived their captivity long enough to be rescued due to the brutality they suffered. With both Alliance and Horde breathing down the necks of the freebooters, another pirate, Annie Bonn, arranged to have Sterling killed by enlisting the aid of adventurers. After his death, she took over the operation.[1]
The pirates were recruited by Zaela and attacked the Temple of the White Tiger on Pandaria. A tauren pirate fought against King Varian Wrynn but was killed by a warlock's felguard and three attacked Aggra but were also killed. Zaela abandoned them, and they were quickly rounded up and turned over to the pandaren.[10]
After the war against the Jailer, Muradin Bronzebeard reported that the pirates at Scalawag Point were still a criminal cartel under Annie, but noted they'd gone from monstrous to merely annoying.[1]

Notes[]
- According to himself, all the Northsea Freebooters fear and respect Grezzix Spindlesnap.[4]
- Because of their lack of hygiene, most of their ships carry five or six times as many rats as pirates, so when they arrived at Scalawag Point, it was no surprise that the nearby bears became rabid soon after.[11]
