− | Beyond the physical world there is something greater it lies infinitely far away, yet also infinitesimally close. It has places of brilliant purity and the darkest chaos. Creatures of air, fire, and shadow call these places their homes; and those from Azeroth who dare to travel into these realms will find them unlike anything they have ever seen before. They are the planes, and the physical world of Azeroth is but one of them. ⚫ | |||
− | Though the titans and eternals have known about the planes for longer than the recorded history of the world, the first time mortal creatures on Azeroth suspected there was something other than the world around them was when the Kaldorei made their way out of the jungles to the shores of the Well of Eternity and stared deep into its waters. There they sensed a great power, and in a course of events that would change the world forever, dedicated themselves to its study. They hoped that they would discover the moon goddess Elune within its waters, but instead they plumbed the darkness and felt the cold touch of the Burning Legion waiting on another plane, the Twisting Nether. |
||
+ | Plane (RPG) |
||
− | |||
− | ===Material Plane=== |
||
− | The Material Plane refers to the mortal, material worlds such as Azeroth, and, in the past, Draenor. All material worlds are made from the same planar material as the known material worlds, though some of them might possess different basic planar traits (from basic physical traits to magic traits). |
||
− | |||
− | Each of these worlds, though they share most of the same planar traits, is separated from the rest in its particular material pocket. As such, each world is treated as its own separate plane — spells such as "teleport" that allow for transport within the Material Plane do not allow for transport between isolated material pockets. Another plane, the Twisting Nether, must be traversed to journey from one to another. |
||
− | |||
− | The eternals and even the goddess Elune share residence on the Material Plane of Azeroth with mortal beings. |
||
− | |||
− | ===Higher planes=== |
||
− | When the term "higher plane" is used, it is in reference to one of the known planes, such as the Emerald Dream, the Twisting Nether, the Great Dark Beyond, the Elemental Plane, or simply another planet out in the Great Dark Beyond. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Great Dark Beyond==== |
||
− | A philosophical placeholder as an answer was agreed that beyond the boundaries of the Twisting Nether, there is the Great Dark Beyond. The Beyond is all that is unknowable about the cosmos. Were part of it to be journeyed to or defined, it would become its own plane. |
||
− | |||
⚫ | |||
− | The Elemental Plane is a prison within the Twisting Nether fashioned by the titans as a separate plane to hold their old foes. The plane the titans created is spherical and comparatively small — about the size of a single world. It is a three-tiered realm. The domain of Air sits atop the middle layer, which supports both the Water and Earth domains. Beneath these lies a third layer of Fire and molten rock. |
||
− | |||
⚫ | |||
− | The Emerald Dream is a kind of echo of what Azeroth would be like if intelligent beings had not altered its surface. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Twisting Nether==== |
||
− | The Twisting Nether is a place where chunks of worlds float among prismatic clouds, and colorful energy ribbons twist through the void. All is spectral and shadowy — blurring together in a muted, multicolored haze that brushes and teases the senses. Physical laws do not exist in this realm of ghosts, save those that a traveler creates for herself. Magic and illusion dance across the ever-changing vastness. Coterminous with all other worlds, the Twisting Nether can be a gateway for those who know how to use it. |
||
− | |||
− | *Titanic Armory: A group of heroes discovered a small portal in the Nether. The portal lead to a demiplane full of titan artifacts — weapons the Pantheon deemed too destructive to use. |
||
− | *Outland: Chunks of barren red rock float in the Twisting Nether’s spectral void. |
||
− | |||
− | ===Multiverse=== |
||
− | Malygos studies the various planes of the multiverse both remotely and in person. It is said that Al'Akir is aware of all air spells that are cast anywhere throughout the multiverse, although if this is true, he rarely becomes personally involved in their resolution unless they affect him directly. |
||
− | |||
− | ===Non-existant planes=== |
||
− | According to the books, there are no Dungeons & Dragons style planes within the Warcraft universe. The Warcraft universe is both simple and vast. Unlike the standard D&D world, Azeroth has no distinct Astral, Ethereal, Inner, Outer, Positive, or Negative Planes — just a measureless nothing known as the Great Dark Beyond. An infinite number of worlds spin within the multiverse and it's impossible to say whether they are scattered across the universe or superimposed upon each other. However, although those planes don't exist, they have a counterpart or are somehow related to the Warcraft universe. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Astral Plane==== |
||
− | The Astral Plane does not exist in Warcraft universe, it is replaced by the Twisting Nether. Outland exists in this plane. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Ethereal Plane==== |
||
− | There is no Ethereal Plan in the Warcraft universe. No exact equivalent of the Ethereal Plane exists in the Warcraft universe. Only the Emerald Dream can be clearly mapped to another plane, that of the physical world of Azeroth, yet they remain distinct places in the cosmos and grow more disparate with each change made in the mortal realm. Ethereal Spells result in the target becoming invisible and intangible to all creatures and effects on the Material Plane. |
||
− | |||
− | As such, any creature described as existing or otherwise interacting with the Ethereal Plane is treated as simply being incorporeal on the Material Plane, but are considered invisible. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Inner and Outer Planes==== |
||
− | Only the titans remain as creatures who may originate from a place beyond the known planes, and the dwarves have yet to discover the answer to their mystery. |
||
− | |||
− | The final destination of the spirits of the deceased remains a mystery to the priests and philosophers of Azeroth. However, as spells such as resurrection can reunite a dead body with its spirit, and a majority of living creatures from the tauren to the troll shadow hunters claim they can communicate with and call upon the power of the spirits, a widely held belief is that the spirits of the dead remain on the Material Plane — in an immaterial state that can only be altered or contacted through the use of magic. |
||
− | |||
− | ====Positive Energy Plane, Negative Energy Plane, and Shadow Plane==== |
||
− | These planes don't appear to exist. But their forces are known to flow through Azeroth and the Twisting Nether. These forces are not limited to any single plane; they are instead an integral part of every aspect of the Warcraft universe, woven into every plane. Thus, spells that call upon these energies such as harm, heal and shadow conjuration instead draw upon local sources rather than reaching to another plane. |
||
− | |||
− | Positive energy remains associated with the energies possessed by living beings, and negative energy with the motive forces of death and the undead. Thus, spells that aid the living with positive energy will harm the undead, and spells that would injure the living using negative energy will heal the undead. |
||
− | |||
− | Magical weapons that have effects wielding these energies draw upon that positive or negative energy bound into their own material, freed by enchantment. |
||

Revision as of 04:45, 6 April 2021
Planes, also known as dimensions,[1] realms of existence[2] or simply realms, are cosmic regions within the Warcraft universe. Besides reality and its physical realm, six cosmic forces form the universe. All these forces push and pull against one another in an unending tug of war, constantly vying for power over each other. If one fell, all worlds would fall into chaos.[3][4]
The multiverse is a term used to refer to all the possible universes in World of Warcraft.[5][6]
Great Dark Beyond
- Main article: Great Dark Beyond
The Great Dark Beyond represents the mortal and the physical universe. It is an infinite living realm composed of innumerable stars, worlds, moons, and mortal civilizations. Azeroth is found in it, and it is merely one of the countless worlds drifting through vast reaches of the Great Dark.[2][7]
The physical world is referred to as the material world or corporeal realm[8] and is in contrast with the realm of spirits.[9][10][11][12]
The Great Dark Beyond may not be the "Order" plane, and the Pantheon may have their own separate plane.[13]
Twisting Nether
- Main article: Twisting Nether
The Twisting Nether is the astral plane between worlds that lies in parallel with the Great Dark Beyond. The forces of Light and Void bleed together at its boundaries, engulfing the Twisting Nether in perpetual strife. Sometimes, the volatile energies that pervade the Nether intrude upon the physical universe, warping reality beyond measure.[2]
Emerald Dream
- Main article: Emerald Dream
The Emerald Dream is an ethereal realm of spirits and untamed nature that exists alongside Azeroth. The titanic keepers forged it to act as a map for the evolutionary path of Azeroth's flora and fauna. As life ebbs and flows across the physical world, the spiritual energies that stature the Dream keep pace with it.[2]
Shadowlands
- Main article: Shadowlands
The Shadowlands are nightmarish realms of decay, labyrinthine spiritual planes teeming with the souls of the dead who have passed from the world of the living. They have existed ever since mortal life arose in the physical universe.[2] Its main realms are Ardenweald, Bastion, Maldraxxus, Revendreth, and the Maw.
The In-Between separates and surrounds the realms of the Shadowlands, and the Veil is the border between the Shadowlands and the living world.
Light and Void
Pure Light and Shadow dwell in a realm outside the borders of reality, but shades of their presence are found in the physical universe as well as engulf the Twisting Nether in perpetual chaos. Light and Shadow are the most fundamental cosmic forces in existence predating the physical universe. Although contradictory in nature, they are bound together on a cosmic scale as one cannot exist without the other.[14] The Void realm is visited in alternate Draenor and on Argus.
Ny'alotha
- Main article: Ny'alotha
Ny'alotha is a realm inhabited by the Old Gods and their minions. It is separated from the physical world by a thin veil.[15]
Pocket dimensions
Pocket dimensions[16][17] (or dimensional pockets)[18] seem to be little parts of a dimension secluded by magic.
Elemental Plane
- Main article: Elemental Plane
The Elemental Plane is the home of all elementals that were removed from Azeroth when the titan-forged Ra and Helya created four interlinked domains within a pocket dimension, imprisoning them millennia ago.[19]
Halls of Valor and Helheim
- Main articles: Halls of Valor, Helheim
Helya called upon the same powers she had used to secure the Elemental Plane and sealed off Odyn's fortress—the Halls of Valor—with an impregnable, magical barrier. She then proceeded to create Helheim as an enchanted refuge for herself and the other Val'kyr far below the Halls.[20]
De Other Side
- Main article: Other Side
De Other Side is Bwonsamdi's pocket dimension in the Shadowlands.
Other pocket dimensions
- A pocket universe was used by Krasus during the War of the Ancients in order to ensure the future of the blue dragonflight. The mage tore an opening in reality and put a few viable dragon eggs into this "pocket universe". He then sealed the opening until a later time when he could surrender the eggs to someone trustworthy. It is noted that time is significantly slower in the dimension.[21]
- The Battle for Mount Hyjal timeway in the Caverns of Time is described as happening in a "time pocket" separated from the world and history.[22]
- Phantasm Zone is a prison dimension in the Twisting Nether in which Magnus Manastorm is imprisoned.
- A spiritual realm[23] is shown to exist inside Frostmourne and as well as in the Blades of the Fallen Prince.
- The mages of Dalaran wove a type of pocket dimension around Ambermill, hiding it from the Forsaken. A Horde adventurer eventually shattered the pocket dimension, bringing Ambermill back to reality.[24][25][26]
- A pocket universe was created by Chromie, a bronze dragon in the guise of a gnome, within a room in the inn of Ruins of Andorhal.
- Malfurion Stormrage banished the worgen to a pocket dimension of the Emerald Dream where Daral'nir is located. From there Arugal summoned them.[27]
- The chrysalun chambers are draconic artifacts that have a pocket universe within themselves.[28]
- Void Storage is accomplished by housing items in a pocket dimension.[29]
- Mardum, the Shattered Abyss was formerly an impregnable pocket dimension within the Twisting Nether called "Mardum, the Plane of Banishment". It was a prison-world created by the titan Sargeras where he imprisoned all the demons he defeated.[30][31]
- Akazamzarak's Hat is a pocket dimension within the top hat of the goblin mage Akazamzarak.
- Prison of Ink is a location inside the Bloodshed Compendium book that inscription adventurers are sent to with the guidance of master blood scribe Kronah.
Other realms
These realms exist but there is not much known about them:
- Quetz'lun's underworld is a special underworld separate from the material world created by the loa at the time of her death as a home of her and her cursed worshipers that killed her.[32][33]
- Twilight Realm is a plane used by members of the Twilight dragonflight.
- Realm of Y'Shaarj is a twisted version of Azeroth visited when fighting the tyrannical Warchief Garrosh Hellscream.
- A Shadow Realm is visited by the arakkoa in alternate Draenor. It is related to the Void.
- Za'qul casts spells which move adventurers into a "Fear realm" or a "Delirium realm". These two realms are referred to as "insanity realms".[34]
- An animate in the Ossein Foundry mentions fighting "meddlers from the Gardens of Life"[35]. This may be related to the Emerald Dream.
In the RPG

Notes
- In the Warcraft universe there have been some quotes about the "Heavens" and "Hell". These are likely flavor lore.
- Heavens: It is said that archangels or guardians took up swords of light to defend the heavens.[36][37]
- Hell: Warcraft I makes reference to Hell and Hades.[39][40] As Uther the Lightbringer died he told Arthas Menethil that "I dearly hope that there's a special place in hell waiting for you, Arthas."[41] and Sylvanas Windrunner when almost killing Arthas Menethil with a poison arrow told him to "Give my regards to hell".[42] Red dragon Caelestrasz inside of Temple of Ahn'Qiraj wishes to focus all powers to see C'Thun "banished back to the hell from whence it came". A Found Memento: Raising a King has Genn Greymane call the Broken Shore where Varian Wrynn died "the very gates of Hell".
- Hell could be referring to: the Shadowlands as that's where souls of the dead travel to, Helheim where some of the spirits of the dishonorable spend eternity, the Twisting Nether as Warcraft I says daemons are hellspawn, the Firelands in the Elemental Plane as there are creatures called hell hounds from there and there is a quest called [35] Through the Gates of Hell with the goal of entering the Firelands.
- The Old Gods ruled over the primal (first, original) plane until the coming of the titans.[43] This likely means the Great Dark Beyond.
- Murmur came from a dimension of the cosmos unfathomable to mortal minds.
- The Reliquary owns a "Grand Vault" the location of which is a closely-guarded secret. Some believe it is not even on this plane of existence.[44]
- When Garrosh Hellscream had Theramore Isle destroyed with a mana bomb, its arcane power caused anomalies of realities and dimensions ripped asunder. One could even glimpse other worlds.[45]
- The void revenants are a race of parasitic void-beings that tear holes through the planes of reality, consuming and absorbing the energies and beings within.[46]
- Warp Shades partially tear an enemy into another dimension.
- Aluneth is a strange, fickle and powerful entity of pure arcane energy hailing from another realm of existence that was brought to the Nexus when blue dragons at some point while manipulating the fabric of reality tapped into this other realm and made contact with the strange arcane entity.[47]
- Consumers of souls in Brawler's Guilds are seen in an alternate dimension[48] by wearing special goggles.
Speculation
This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.
|
- The Wizard's Sanctum Stormwind Portal Room could be its own pocket dimension, as it's entered from a portal atop the Wizard's Sanctum tower.
- Caverns of Time could be its own plane.
- Inner Veil is inside the "spectral realm" in the Kalecgos fight in the Sunwell Plateau raid, it's possibly its own plane.
- The Eye of Eternity is the personal domain of Malygos and as such may be its own plane.
- The Mind's Eye entered by portals open in the fight with Yogg-Saron could be its own plane.
- There are five portals within the Chamber of Aspects beneath Wyrmrest Temple two of which are open and lead to the Ruby Sanctum and Obsidian Sanctum. They may be their own planes or unknown locations in the world.
- Bastion of Twilight entered through a portal above the Twilight Citadel could be in a separate plane.
- Dread Expanse is a location where the Sha of Fear retreats to, it could be its own plane.
- The Nexus Vault is accessed by way of portal and has a specific otherworldly appearance so it may be its own plane. But Kalec says: "The Nexus Vault lies deep beneath the main spire. You will find its entrance in the lowest chamber of the spire's base." But this may only mean it's former entrance was there.
- Realm of the Mage Hunter is the domain of the eredar lord Balaadur, however the Archive of the Tirisgarde mentions that Balaadur took Ebonchill when its owner got ripped into the Twisting Nether, so it's uncertain if Balaadur's realm is a place in the Twisting Nether or its own dimension. For comparison the [45] Between Worlds quest has Kruul's Twisting Nether location described as his realm.
- A Found Memento: Raising a King has Anduin Wrynn in a surprising vision see his father Varian Wrynn, it's unclear if this is a memory or perhaps a vision of Varian from some sort of afterlife.
- Forge of Aeons a place sacred to the Army of the Light accessed by a Lightforged beacon on the Vindicaar may be its own plane.
- Telogrus Rift is described in Umbric's Notes - Dawnstar Spire as "teetering on the brink of the void itself" and that "it existed within a rift in the very fabric of reality", so it's unknown on what plane it's located.
- While Infestation of Madness in Nazjatar is alive and you're on the platform with it, the sky transforms to the same one that is in the tunnel in Caverns of Time. This could mean you enter or see a vision of a different plane, perhaps the void realm.
- Visions of N'Zoth could be on a separate plane.
- A version of the Chamber of Heart that Wrathion has constructed as a place between places as a way to distance himself from the corruption of the Horrific Visions entered from the Chamber of Heart.[49]
- Entering the mind of N'Zoth is done in the N'Zoth the Corruptor raid fight which could be its own plane.
