Powerful Mana Gems are looted from the objects of the same name in Alodi's Bank Vault in Dalaran during 
[10-45] Alodi's Gems.
In older times, when magic was less understood and spells required vast amounts of mana to cast, these gems were used to store mana for use in complex spells.[1]

Three of them need to be acquired for [10-45] Alodi's Gems.
