The Return to Karazhan is a megadungeon located in southern Deadwind Pass in the Eastern Kingdoms, designed for level 110 characters. It prominently features the story of the Last Guardian, Medivh, as well as his apprentice, Khadgar.
Return to Karazhan features many encounters found in its spiritual predecessor, such as Attumen the Huntsman, Moroes, Maiden of Virtue, and The Curator. It also features new encounters and original story elements, including the battle against the twisted shade of the Guardian Medivh and a new, fearsome Legion commander, known as Viz'aduum the Watcher, who intends to anchor the tower into the Twisting Nether and turn it into a second major gateway for the Burning Legion to flood Azeroth with their unholy forces.
The instance was originally released with patch 7.1 as a Mythic-only dungeon. With patch 7.2 the dungeon was also made available in Heroic and Mythic Keystone modes, both of which see the dungeon split into two wings - Lower Return to Karazhan and Upper Return to Karazhan. A Rusty Set of Keys is necessary to advance in the dungeon.
Adventure Guide[]
From the moment of its mysterious creation, the purpose of this dark tower has been intertwined with the history of the Guardians of Tirisfal, once Azeroth's greatest bulwark against the Legion. It is now best known as the home of Medivh, who tragically betrayed Azeroth and brought the unbroken chain of Guardians to an end. This legacy makes Karazhan a place of particular interest for the Legion, who have descended in full force in an effort to open a new front in their war on the denizens of Azeroth.

Notes[]
- The dialogue between the visions of Khadgar and Anduin Lothar in the Guardian's Study is taken word for word from The Last Guardian. Likewise, several of the Shade of Medivh's lines, including his introduction and death quotes, are also directly from The Last Guardian.
- Some visions that appear in Karazhan's rooms originally happened in Stormwind City (Medivh killing Nielas) and Northshire Abbey (Llane and Anduin checking on Medivh in a coma).
Patch changes[]
- Patch 7.2.0 (2017-03-28): Lower Karazhan and Upper Karazhan have been added to the Random Legion Heroic list in Dungeon Finder.
- Hotfix (2016-11-03): (REQUIRES RESTARTS) When returning to a partially-cleared Karazhan, the bosses and associated minions that had previously been defeated by the party leader should now properly be absent, and other players with different boss lockouts should be able to join without issue.
- Patch 7.1.0 (2016-10-25): Added.
