Ritual of Summoning is designed to summon a non-present party member to the warlock's location. The spell requires 2 other party members present, which can be of any class, and the summoning consumes a Soul Shard when accepted.

The warlock begins the ritual by casting Ritual of Summoning, which opens a portal. The other 2 present party members (without moving) then right-click on the portal to concentrate on it. Once the portal is ready, the targeted party member has 2 minutes to accept the summoning, and if accepted, will be teleported to the portal's location. Summoning can be accepted while in flight, but not while in combat (if the summoned player drops out of combat during the two-minute time period, he can still accept the summon; the Accept button is merely grayed out until then).

The targeted player will be teleported to the location where the portal appeared.

A warlock can target him or herself as the summoning target in order to quickly hearth, repair, and quickly return back to the spot the ritual was performed. This works inside of an instance as long as the warlock meets the requirements for the instance.

Limitations

A Warlock (with two party members standing with the Warlock to assist - this always applies except when using a Meeting Stone), can summon from anywhere in Azeroth or Outland to wherever the Warlock is, whether it be in Azeroth, Outland or the Warlocks instance, however only if the summoned player is within the level restriction of the instance.

Because parts of the Netherstorm zone are impossible to access without a flying mount, Blizzard initially made it impossible for Warlocks to summon inside the zone. The lore reason for this was that Netherstorm's chaotic energies make summoning magically impossible. As of patch 2.4 this restriction has been lifted.

Changes in 3.0.8

Blizzard has announced that as of 3.0.8, Warlocks will be able to create a summoning portal. This summoning portal will require the Warlock plus two additional party members present to create. Once this portal is created, it will act like a Meeting Stone. As such, once the portal is created, the Warlock will no longer be required to be present for summoning as any two party members can use the portal to summon other party members. The summoning portal will be available for 5 minutes and can be used to summon as many party members as needed within the 5 minutes, and can also be used by players not in the original party. The portal can be used by multiple people at once and will only require one Soul Shard to create. It is likely that once 3.0.8 goes live, Spell shadow twilight [Ritual of Summoning] will be removed from the game, to be replaced by this new summoning mechanic.
