The Saronite Animus spawns during the encounter with General Vezax. If you do not destroy any Saronite Vapors, once the sixth one spawns they will immediately merge into the Saronite Animus. General Vezax will become invulnerable to all damage until the Animus is destroyed.
It uses Profound Darkness, which deals periodic shadow damage to the entire raid and applies a debuff that increases shadow damage taken.
Destroying the Animus is required for the achievement 
[I Love the Smell of Saronite in the Morning].
