Tips and tactics
- If you need to interrupt a spell or ability, Scatter Shot can do it.
- When you're running somewhere and there's a mob in your way that you don't want to fight, Scatter Shot will shut him down long enough for you to run past and out of melee range. Once you're past you can either [Feign Death] to reset him or lay a [Freezing Trap] or [Frost Trap] to gain extra distance.
- If chasing after a mob and within range of this shot, you can use it to disorient the target long enough to lay a Freezing Trap or Frost Trap under it. This will stop it from running, allowing you time to get the kill.
- If you need to escape, e.g. from a higher-level mob that you stand little chance of killing, Scatter Shot is a very good choice - much better than trying to [Feign Death] or using a trap, as both of these have a substantial chance of being resisted by a high level mob. Scatter Shot the mob, then immediately turn on [Aspect of the Cheetah] and run. You will outrun most mobs this way provided you have a small head-start, which Scatter Shot can give you. You can drop a [Freezing Trap] while fleeing on the chance that it might activate and freeze the pursuing enemy. It may be resisted, or it may work. As long as you keep running while you drop it there is no harm. This Scatter Shot > Flee tactic is less effective when you're beset by two or more enemies, as Scatter Shot's cooldown is too long to use on both of them. However, Readiness (hunter ability) can be used to fire a second Scatter Shot, either on the second mob that is chasing you, or on the single mob chasing you after the first Scatter Shot effect has ended.
Patch changes
- Patch 5.3.0 (2013-05-21): Now shares diminishing returns with [Freezing Trap] and [Wyvern Sting].
- Hotfix (2012-10-04): Scatter Shot will now properly break when damage is dealt by any source.
- Patch 4.1.0 (2011-04-26): Scatter Shot's disorient effect should no longer sometimes be broken by the hunter's Auto Shot.
- Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): No longer talented, available to all hunters.
- Patch 2.1.0 (2007-05-22): This ability will now trigger [Kill Command] when it critically strikes.
- Patch 1.7.0 (2005-09-13):
- Should now cancel combat mode when used.
- The tooltips for quick Hunter shots have been updated to show them as instant abilities.
- Patch 1.5.0 (2005-06-07): Special ability shots no longer add the ranged weapon speed or take into account ranged weapon haste when determining the actual cooldown. The tooltip and cooldown timers should now properly reflect the actual cooldown.
- Patch 1.4.0 (2005-04-19): Now usable while moving and no longer interrupts ranged combat. Now properly reduces the ranged attack power contribution by the percent modifier.
