Magna Scavell of the Order of Tirisfal was the Guardian for several centuries, starting around more than a millennium prior to the First War. When the time to retire from his century of guardianship came, he discovered that there were no suitable replacements to take his place. As such he reluctantly agreed to remain as Guardian. Over Scavell's long guardianship he and the council would keep a strong relationship as they continued to protect the world from the Legion.[1] In particular he would consider Erbag and Relfthra, the gnomish and high elven representatives to the council, among his closest friends.
When Sargeras found that one of his servants, Sataiel, was planning to betray him, he sent several visions to Scavell that depicted a dangerous demon lurking in Deadwind Pass and awaiting the return of the Burning Legion. Scavell hunted Sataiel down and, after an epic battle, slew her with her own scythe, Ulthalesh, and sent her soul screaming into the weapon. When Scavell examined the blade, he was filled with dread and wondered if the real threat remained unchecked. He decided to hide Ulthalesh where no one would find it.[2]
Some eight hundred years ago, Scavell decided that he'd had enough of the Guardianship, and sought out likely successors. Over the next few years, he gathered five powerful apprentices:
- Falric was eldest and the smartest.
- Jonas was apparently the most powerful — and the least original.
- Manfred was the most creative.
- Aegwynn mastered the powerful Meitre scrolls in her first year.
- Natale, despite a fear of demons, was effective at banishing undead.
Of the five, Aegwynn showed the greatest overall aptitude, and was invested with the power of the Tirisfalen halfway through her apprenticeship. Scavell survived the transference ritual by only a year, dying peacefully in his sleep. His other four apprentices joined the Order, and eventually died battling demons.
Shortly after Aegwynn's four hundredth birthday, she named her pet thunder lizard after her long-gone master.[3]
