The Seers[2] are an order of tauren priests who revere the wisdom of the Earthmother as illuminated by the Light of An'she,[3] and exist under the leadership of the Sunwalkers.
They were founded by Tahu Sagewind after a series of theological discussions with Aponi Brightmane about the importance of balancing out the night elven focus on moon-worship through reverence of light as part of their worship of the Earth Mother. As such, they rediscovered the use of the Light.[4] The way of the priest is a new one for the tauren, but it draws on the ancient traditions of their seers,[3] and they are not forging a new path so much as rediscovering old ways that we had forgotten.[5]
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Tahu and the Seers answered Alonsus Faol's call to unite all the priesthoods of Azeroth and joined the ranks of the Conclave.
History[]
Foundation[]
Concurrently with the war against the Lich King, in the Elder Rise of Thunder Bluff, Tahu Sagewind and Aponi Brightmane discussed whether the tauren have overlooked a key aspect of balance, noting the night elves' near exclusive worship of the moon, known to the tauren as Mu'sha. Yet in their culture, both Mu'sha and An'she, the sun, are the eyes of the Earth Mother. As Tahu realized this, he pondered what could happen should tauren start to harness the power of the sun. The pair then concluded that the night elves, through their ties to tauren druids, passed on their cultural prejudice against the sun to their tauren students. To properly revere the Earth Mother they hold sacred, both of them decided to strive for balance and further explore the powers of An'she.[6]
Many have speculated that this intense pondering led Tahu to abandon his druidic path in order to create the first priests of the tauren, allowing them to channel the powers of the Light to aid their people,[4] while Aponi abandoned her warrior ways and became the first tauren paladin, in an order now known as the Sunwalkers.
Cataclysm[]
At the time of the Cataclysm, the priesthood was officially created and began recruiting to train tauren priests, notably some shaman who renounced their path, such as Seer Ravenfeather.
In Camp Narache, Seer Ravenfeather summoned young seers to teach them the ways of the priests.[3] She notably taught them a versatile and quick healing technique, and then to heal the tauren injured during battles against the Bristleback tribe around Camp Narache, so they'll have a chance to put their new knowledge to use right away.[7]
In the Valley of Wisdom of Orgrimmar, the priest trainer Seer Liwatha requested to meet young tauren seers who completed their early training with skill and dedication, and were now ready to become a full seer.[8][9] When they learned that the Twilight's Hammer continued to persuade the Dark Irons to strengthen their alliance and wage a campaign of conquest in Blackrock Depths, Liwatha sent them to destroy the material the cultists were distributing to the dwarves.[10] On the orders of Warchief Garrosh Hellscream, she also sent them to Shadowfang Keep to recover materials and the holy symbol of Commander Springvale for the creation of weapons at the height of their dedication.[11]
Warlords of Draenor[]
During the war against the Iron Horde in alternate Draenor, a few seers could be met and recruited as followers at the Frostwall garrison.
Legion[]
Prior to the Battle for the Broken Shore, some seers could be seen at the sparring ring of the Dranosh'ar Blockade, where Horde champions fought in preparation for the assault on the Broken Shore.
After the fall of Tirion Fordring at the Battle for Broken Shore, the paladin Orik Trueheart and the Highlord of the Silver Hand asked the Sunwalkers for help to communicate with the spirit of the vrykul Gorvold Ironbrow at Shield Hill, in order to learn more about the location of the [Truthguard]. The Sunwalkers provided assistance by sending Tahu Sagewind to assist them in their quest.[12]
During the third invasion of the Burning Legion, Tahu and the Seers answered Alonsus Faol's call to unite all the priesthoods of Azeroth and joined the ranks of the Conclave under the new High Priest of the order.[13] Therefore, several tauren sun priests were seen in Dalaran, and later fighting demons on the Broken Shore as members of the Armies of Legionfall. They were also present to defend the Netherlight Temple from the nathrezim Balnazzar and his demonic army.[14]
Before the Storm[]
When High King Anduin Wrynn visited the Netherlight Temple, he saw a few tauren priests,[15] indicating that the Seers remained affiliated with the Conclave after the end of the demonic invasion.
Shadowlands[]
In the Barracks of Orgrimmar, the priest trainer Martin Goodchilde requested to meet young tauren seers who completed their early training with skill and dedication, and were now ready to become a full seer.[16][17] When they learned that the Twilight's Hammer started to persuade the Dark Irons to strengthen their alliance and wage a campaign of conquest in Blackrock Depths, Goodchilde sent them to destroy the material the cultists were distributing to the dwarves.[10] He also sent them to Shadowfang Keep to recover materials and the holy symbol of Commander Springvale for the creation of weapons at the height of their dedication,[11] as Seer Liwatha did in the past.
Dragonflight[]
By the time of the emergence of the Dragon Isles, the Seers had recruited and trained Highmountain tauren as priests of the sun in their ranks, such as Seer Shinetotem.
Culture[]
- Main article: Sunwalkers#Culture
In their faith, the Light is associated with An'she,[4] which gives them their powers.[18] It is important to note that they don't use solar magic, since it is associated to nature magic rather than holy magic.[19] When they refer to the Light, they use the terms "An'she's light",[20] "the light of the Sun", and "Sun's light".[21] The power of An'she can appear either as red flames emerging from a white-hot source or as golden magic similar to other divine magic.[22]
In order to use their holy powers, they may pray to An'she silently[23] or verbally.[24] As they become more skilled, their skills will expand, and they gain access to many new powers.[25] Through the powers of An'she, Tahu Sagewind is notably able to speak with the spirits of long departed,[1] and can compel them to tell the truth.[26]
