Shadow wolves are a spirit wolves that can be summoned by far seers to do their bidding.

In the RPG

This section contains information from the Warcraft RPG which is considered non-canon.

The creature resembles a massive dire wolf, solid black, and powerful. Its image is hazy and faintly glows when it shows itself. Shadow wolves are essentially more powerful spirit wolves, summoned when a little extra muscle is needed. Many orc shamans summon shadow wolves as quick and powerful temporary mounts.

In Manual of Monsters's Appendix Three, the shadow wolf is described as a member of the Scourge, however, the validity of the source is disputed.
