The Shadowmoon Valley storyline takes place after completing the Alliance portion of the Warlords of Draenor intro experience in Tanaan Jungle. The main storyline is tracked in the quest achievement Alliance  [As I Walk Through the Valley of the Shadow of Moon].

There are also a large number of vignettes in Shadowmoon Valley, as in all zones of Draenor.

Main storyline

Establishing a Foothold

Plant the banner to stake a claim

After landing, a base of operations is in order. But make sure to clear out the hostiles first!

After completing "Delegating on Draenor", two quests open up: A [10-40] A Hero's Welcome, which starts the "Shadows Awaken" chapter, and A [10-40] Migrant Workers, which starts the "The Pursuit of Justice" chapter. Additionally, a breadcrumb to Ashran opens up in B [10-40] Ashran Appearance.

Yrel wants to go on a welcome back tour, but things quickly go south after the Shadowmoon clan start invading.

Ner'zhul has taken Samaara, so it's time to go get her back and figure out what Ner'zhul's grand plan is.

Clearing a path to Karabor

The Iron Horde has launched their attack on Karabor! It's time to stop Ner'zhul once and for all.

This concludes the primary Shadowmoon Valley storyline. After completing "The Defense of Karabor", Yrel sends players on to the Gorgrond storyline in A [15-40] The Secrets of Gorgrond. That breadcrumb is also available the instant players reach level 92 by speaking with Bodrick Grey at the garrison.

Don't forget the side-storyline quests in the next sections. In addition, check your mailbox for a mail from Yrel containing the  [The Prophet's Arcanum], for A [10-40] The Prophet's Final Message.

Gloomshade Grove

King Deathbloom

The podlings just outside Lunarfall in Gloomshade Grove have started attacking workers, so it's up to the commander to defend against the threat. A breadcrumb to Gloomshade Grove opens up after completing the "Shadows Awaken" chapter back at the garrison, but the chain can be started by finding the Lost Packmule in the Plains of Serenity, just south of the grove.

The Pursuit of Justice

There's a traitor here. Guess who?

The garrison needs food, so some workers are sent out to Elodor, the breadbasket of Shadowmoon Valley, but things quickly spiral out of control. This side story opens up upon completion of A [10-40] Delegating on Draenor.

How'd they fit the caravan through the portal?

A breadcrumb to the Drakkorium opens up after completing the "Shadows Awaken" chapter, but the chain can be started by heading there at any point. A traveler (and her caravan) from Eastern Plaguelands makes an appearance!

Garrison buildings

Level 2 upgrade

At level 15, Baros Alexston offers a quest to upgrade the Garrison to level 2, and awards the commander all Level 1 blueprints with the exception of the Salvage Yard.


After reaching level 15 and garrison level 2, Timothy Leens wants the commander to clear out the mine:

Fishing Hut

After reaching level 20 and garrison level 2, Ron Ashton wants the commander to find someone who knows how to fish on Draenor:

After reaching level 30 and garrison level 2, Naron Bloomthistle wants the commander to clear out the herb garden:

Level 3 upgrade

After reaching level 35 and garrison level 2, Baros Alexston offers a quest to upgrade the garrison to level 3. For a cost, of course.


After reaching level 35 and garrison level 3, Lio the Lioness wants the commander's pets to deal with pests around the garrison. This is a Pet Battle System-related building.

Alchemy lab

Alchemists who complete A [10-40] Shadows Awaken will find a  [Mysterious Flask] in the Gift of the Draenei gift bag to start this side chain to unlock Draenor Alchemy and, if not already learned, the Garrison Alchemy Lab blueprints.

Somewhere in Shadowmoon Valley, Leatherworkers will find the  [Dirty Note], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Leatherworking and the Tannery.

Engineering Works

Engineers will eventually be able to find a  [Gnomish Location Transponder], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Engineering and Engineering Works.

Blacksmiths will eventually find  [Haephest's Satchel], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Blacksmithing and The Forge.

Enchanter's Study

Enchanters will eventually find the  [Enchanted Highmaul Bracer], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Enchanting and the Enchanter's Study.

Tailoring Emporium

Tailors will eventually find the  [Cryptic Tome of Tailoring], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Tailoring and the Tailoring Emporium.

Scribe's Quarters

Scribes will eventually find a  [Mysterious Satchel], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Inscription and the Scribe's Quarters.

Gem Boutique

Jewelcrafters will eventually find a  [Drained Crystal Fragment], which starts a short quest chain to unlock Draenor Jewelcrafting and the Gem Boutique.
