Shan'do is a courtesy title of great respect meaning "honored teacher" in Darnassian, the language of the night elves.[1][2][3][4][5][6] It can also be translated as "honored instructor".[7] The complementary honorific is thero'shan ("honored student").
The nightborne also use the title of "honored teacher",[8] though the Shalassian word for it is unknown.
People referred to as shan'do[]
Cenarius is addressed as shan'do by his students Malfurion Stormrage[2][5][9][10] and Xarantaur.[11]
Malfurion Stormrage, the first mortal druid, is often simply called "Shan'do Stormrage" by other druids[4][12][13][14] and by night elves in general,[15][16][17][18][19][6][20] as well as by other races[21][22] and magical beings.[23][24][25][26]
Naralex[3]
Archdruid of the Dreamgrove[27][28][29]
Rhonin, while trapped in the past of the War of the Ancients, was at one point addressed as shan'do by Illidan Stormrage, who often studied Rhonin's spellcasting.[30]
Chief Telemancer Oculeth is called "honored teacher" by his ex-apprentice Warpcaster Thwen.[8]

This article or section includes speculation, observations or opinions possibly supported by lore or by Blizzard officials. It should not be taken as representing official lore.

- As the element shan is present in both shan'do and thero'shan, it likely means "honored". The placement of shan first in shan'do may indicate an emphasis on "honored", reflecting the teacher's superiority to the student.
- The suffix 'do also appears in the words minn'do ("mother")[31] and Nahlen'do ("master of the fang"),[32] and may therefore have connotations of "superior" or "elder" in general.
- The name of the high elven Runestone Shan'dor may be derived from shan'do.
