Smite is the first priest spell, known by all priests from level 1. Priests that specialize into Shadow will have this spell replaced with Spell shadow siphonmana [Mind Flay].

Tips and tactics[]

  • Smite is the staple damage spell for Holy and Discipline priests used to fill space in the rotation while other more powerful attacks are on cooldown.
  • Thanks to Ability priest atonement [Atonement], Discipline priests can use Smite to heal their allies.


  • Holy Smite is a basic Priest spell in Hearthstone. The flavor text reads: "It doesn't matter how pious you are. Everyone needs a good smiting now and again."

  • Dragonflight Hotfix (2023-04-10): Damage increased by 30%.
  • Dragonflight Patch 10.0.0 (2022-10-25): Rank 2 converted into the Spell holy holysmite [Improved Smite] talent.
  • Shadowlands Patch 9.0.1 (2020-10-13): No longer absorbs damage or resets Holy Fire's cooldown. Rank 2 now learned at level 13 (was 16).
  • Battle for Azeroth Patch 8.1.0 (2018-12-11): Damage reduced by 11%.

    • Additional effect added for Discipline at level 10: Now prevents 100% of the damage dealt to be dealt by the enemy.

  • Warlords of Draenor Hotfix (2014-10-30): Smite critical hits should no longer incorrectly cause the target to be healed for a greater than intended amount through Ability priest atonement [Atonement] while also receiving a larger than intended damage shield that's granted through Spell holy devineaegis [Divine Aegis].
  • Cataclysm Hotfix (2010-12-02): Smite's scaling coefficient has been increased. The damage of Smite is now very similar to Heal in value.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.0.1 (2010-10-12): Now costs 15% of base mana, up from 9% of base mana. Cast time increased from 1.5 sec to 2.5 sec.
  • Test-inline Patch 0.12 (2004-10-11): Holy Smite has been renamed to Smite.
  • Test-inline Patch 0.9 (2004-08-17): Cast time slightly increased, damage reduced, mana cost reduced.
  • Test-inline Patch 0.6 (2004-04-13): Has been moved to levels 1, 6, 14, 22, 30 and 38.
