Southshore is the third mission of the Horde campaign in Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness.
Mission briefing[]
In preparation for a final strike on Hillsbrad, the War Chief directs you to begin construction of facilities for the Orcish Armada near the Southshore region.
Zuljin and his Trolls, eager to take revenge upon the Humans who imprisoned them, have agreed to aid the Horde by supplying Axethrowers and Destroyers to assist in defending your Southshore operation.
A Shipyard must be constructed in order to build our wave riders and you will need much of the black liquid known as Oil to build your fleet.
Our assault on Hillsbrad cannot begin until your task is completed.
Objective[]
- Build a Shipyard
- Build four Oil Platforms
Background[]
- Note: this account comes from the Official Strategy Guide, which features a first-person description of each mission from the game.
The training of more workers and the construction of pig farms came first to build up resources for a lumber mill. The Horde needed this to process boards and masts for new ships, and to supply the materials needed for a shipyard. The soldiers practiced beating each other to relieve boredom, for the humans had yet to show themselves.
Once construction of the shipyard had commenced, they sent the destroyer that had brought them to the island, to survey the rest of the area. It found several human spies hiding in the tree line east of the camp, and easily blew them into tiny bits before returning to the shipyard. The Horde spotted several enemy ships and structures around a smaller island to the northeast, and with a growing number of workers and farm to feed their sailors, they soon launched their first oil tanker to build a platform over a convenient patch of dark sludge nearby to the southwest. With this, they could also begin building more destroyers to clear the way for more platforms. Four tankers quickly provided the oil required to launch four more destroyers; they sent these northward in a tight flotilla. The humans were completely unprepared, having no spies left to report to them, and the Horde laid waste to their work step-by-step. With five warships against no more than two enemy ships at a time, the task of clearing the seas was easy. Horde tankers then moved in to replace the human platforms they had obliterated. Plans were made to conduct a final amphibious raid on Hillsbrad.[1]
Alternate text[]
The Official Strategy Guide adds another paragraph to the mission briefing, which never appeared in the actual game:
The seas are rich with this substance; your Oil Tankers will need to build Platforms where it is thick. The Tankers will bring this oil back to the mainland to power our ships of war. Our assault on Hillsbrad cannot being until your task has been completed.
