A spy is an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information.
They are under command of spymasters or spymistresses. Among their tools they use to gather information are spybots and spyglasses.

Before the Third War, the kingdom of Stormwind spied on the kingdom of Lordaeron through its SI:7 to gain vital information and later to investigate the rumors of the plague of undeath.[1]
Back when he was Warchief, Thrall personally employed a small, scrawny, nondescript human information gatherer to spy on Alliance dealings. He wasn't happy to do it, but was also certain Jaina Proudmoore had her own spies in his lands.[2]
