Surwich is a Gilnean fishing village[1] and port located to the southwest of the Blasted Lands. Founded at the time of the Cataclysm, most of its citizens are refugees of Gilneas who came to the area after losing their home, following the dream of an idealistic druid named Marl Wormthorn.
Upon their arrival, Wormthorn believed that the Tainted Scar could be healed, and attempted to grow it back by creating the great tree Maldraz with his power. At first, it was a success and the forest was restored, allowing the refugees to build Surwich where the Tainted Scar was once present. However, it also lured the majority of demons still present in the scar, and some dreadlords took the opportunity to corrupt the great tree and the Gilnean druid, leading to the birth of the Tainted Forest.[2][3]
At some point, a large number of Gilnean ships sailed towards Surwich, with only civilians aboard.[4] However, the inhabitants of Nethergarde Keep reported that after a few days a storm brought some ships back to the Shattershore, revealing that they had sunk for unknown reasons and that their drowned occupants now haunt the coast.[5]
Under the orders of Mayor Charlton Connisport, Alliance adventurers brought their aid by reducing the number of demons threatening Surwich and the forest.[6] In order to halt the corruption, Marl Wormthorn was secretly eliminated,[7] as the morale of the citizens was already low. It is unknown how they later reacted to his death, as they clung so tightly to the druid's dream.[8]
Years later, when the Ironmarch entered Azeroth through the Dark Portal, the village was still active and was spared from being attacked by the orcs of the Iron Horde.

Trivia[]
- Surwich was the only populated Gilnean town outside of Gilneas itself that used the Gilnean building architecture, until Legion added the village of Bradensbrook in Val'sharah - Talonbranch Glade and Raven Hill use Gilnean props, but not buildings; Farwatcher's Glen, despite being mostly Gilnean, uses night elven architecture.
- Surwich, for a time, was entirely empty after the Ironmarch invasion from the Dark Portal. This was changed at an unknown point and is now the only Alliance-friendly town in the zone within the phase.
- Despite having been one of the first Gilnean towns showcased for Cataclysm, prior to patch 4.3.2., Surwich's NPCs used the Stormwind human voices (used as placeholders while Gilnean voices were set up in the beta). This did not include the Surwich Wardens, which were added in 4.0.6. after developers forgot to include guards for the town.
- Surwich was known for being an easy spot for Horde players to grief. Prior to patch 4.0.6, the town had no guards. Even after the patch, only one guard would spawn that was afflicted by an odd bug where it takes anywhere from thirty seconds to several minutes to even appear. This was fixed as well, and many guards will now spawn as expected.
- This town could be named after the town of "Dunwich" from the writings of H. P. Lovecraft. They both seem to have a problem with corruption of some kind; for Dunwich it was corruption via the Elder Ones, while Surwich has an obvious problem with demons.
