Draenei Classes[]

Got the new Draenei classes up there from the NYT interview. They appear to be balanced pretty well, except for the Alliance having one extra priest. --Xmuskrat 10:46, 10 May 2006 (EDT)

Yes, but the Horde also get one extra Warlock. Either way, someone needs to get base stats! Not really important, but I'm thinking the Draenei will be more Str/Sta oriented, like Dwarves, Tauren and Orcs. --Adonzo 01:08, 11 May 2006 (EDT)
Aw, E3's over and there's still no base stats! =(
Hope somebody managed to grab 'em. --Adonzo 01:57, 13 May 2006 (EDT)
Speaking of base stats, I updated the other races and took away the warrior class bonuses that were included on most of them. I also took out the mage bonus from the Blood Elves. --Drewbacca 13:15, 7 June 2006 (EDT)

High Elves[]

The line adding High Elves as well as the comment on why are total fan fiction and belong only on pages tagged 'rumor'.

The race-specific pages now use templates for the Racial Traits e.g. {{Dwarf Traits}} etc, to ensure the traits listed in the Racial Traits page will always match those in the class specific pages such as Dwarf. For that reason, I've used bold font rather than headlines - in this way, the traits can be inserted into _any_ Wiki page. The downside is you can't index the individual traits, but you can always link to the class traits, e.g. Dwarf Traits if you wanted to reference something like Stone Form.

I've reformatted some of the attributes to use tables with links through to the relevant attribute, but I can't find a source for the base-stats for each race. I've a feeling the stats listed at the moment are each class-specific. If someone can validate the stats it'd be great. If they can format em like the Dwarf attribute table too (or something nicer), even better!

One further idea for these pages would be to create links to some additional pages discussing the starting areas and the main cities. These could, in turn, link to maps, Quests etc. Also some more lore like that in the Night Elf page would fit in nicely if anyone has time

Blood Elf Classes[]

Only a couple classes are confirmed for the Blood Elves. Others haven't yet been confirmed. If I've missed the announcement, please link it here.

  • For sure: Warrior, Mage, Warlock. Perhaps not officially confirmed, but it's pretty obvious.
  • Possible: Priest, Rogue, Hunter
  • No chance: Druid, Shaman, Paladin

Theory: Hunters seem likely, since they have such a long history with ranged weapons (they were the main ranged unit in WC2 and WC3X). Considering their demonic-nature focus, it seems less likely that they are Priests, but since the Horde only has 2 priest races anyway, they probably can be priests. No clue about rogues.

--Bevans (FeldmanSkitzoid) 14:51, 21 Dec 2005 (EST)

Hunter for Blood Elves doesn't make sense to me. Isn't being a Hunter a naturey thing? Blood Elves are pretty much anti-nature. --Fandyllic 12:35 PM PST 30 Mar 2006
In a new dev interview on Gamespot, they confirm Mages and Rogues.--Bevans (FeldmanSkitzoid) 10:58, 1 April 2006 (EST)

I'm kinda annoyed that Blood Elves' can't be Hunters, seen as how they has such a history as the best damn Archers and Rangers in the world. --Adonzo 17:33, 1 June 2006 (EDT)

It's interesting (in a pure scientific sense, of course) to look back at this and, well, laugh. "For sure: Warrior, No chance: Paladin". INV Misc Orb 04Xavius, the Satyr Lord 17:56, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Other Races list[]

Why do we have a list of other races and creatures on this page? That's why we have the Category:Creatures page. I think we need to axe it and make the link to Creatures a little bit more pronounced. Otherwise, the list on this page is just going to get larger and larger, as was the case before I split the Creatures page off onto its own page.

--Bevans (FeldmanSkitzoid) 11:30, 8 August 2006 (EDT)
The idea is that it's a list of other SENTIENT, generally humanoid races that are important to the game. It does, however, need to be trimmed a bought. --Adonzo 17:36, 8 August 2006 (EDT)

Final New Race Stats[]

The new mini site seems to indicate that blood elves have had their starting stats buffed a bit, stamina was increased to 22, I think. Suzaku 02:55, 12 January 2007 (EST)

The mini-site also says that Hunters and Rogues gain a +3 bonus to stamina. Methinks somethings not right with the mini-site. Wait for in-game stats IMO. --Adonzo 22:53, 14 January 2007 (EST)

Sentience and sapience[]

Can we please find and replace all usages of the word 'sentience' when referring to the ability to think conciously? This is a common misconception somewhat furthered by extensive usage in fiction like Star Wars; and it just irritates me...

Sentience refers to possession of sensory organs, the ability to feel or perceive, not necessarily including the faculty of self-awareness. The possession of sapience is not a necessity. The word sentient is often confused with the word sapient, which can connote knowledge, consciousness, or apperception. The root of the confusion is that the word conscious has a number of different usages in English. The two words can be distinguished by looking at their Latin roots: sentire, "to feel"; and sapere, "to know". Sentience is the ability to sense. It is separate from, and not dependent on, aspects of consciousness.

Races based on continents?[]

Recently, with the influx of new races from WotLK, the Azeroth portion of the race box is getting quite crowded, I suggest we separate races up based on continents. For races that are present on multiple continents, put them under continent of origin, and if that's not possible, the continent where they have the most influence. Omacron 07:31, 5 August 2007 (UTC)

That might not be the best idea, because theres species that live in both continents altrough it needs to get shorter, maybe reducing the elves, and trolls and others to one link maybe, i dont know.--Ashbear160 21:35, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Yes, I can be serious, a veces. I swear it. The night elves are the enemies of Shatterspear trolls, as well as Darkspear, Amani and Sandfury trolls. DK Starting Stats[]

Spi 46 41 42 42 44 45 47 44 43 41

--Adonzo (talk) 23:22, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

Using the base 20 stats of a human for Str, Agi, Sta and Int, and the base 20 Spi of nelfs/gnomes, we determine that the base starting stats of a DK before racial modifiers is 108 Str, 73 Agi, 99 Sta, 29 Int, 42 Spi.
Now if only someone conveniently had a couple level 55 toons of other classes for comparison, we would be able to determine a DKs level 1 class modifiers --Adonzo (talk) 23:28, 25 August 2008 (UTC)

New WOTLK Races?[]

Race names[]

I was wondering when does an individual in the Warcraft universe go from one race category to the next? To clarify, if an "orc" and a "human" have offspring they are now a "half-orc". Now if that "half-orc" and another "half-orc" have offspring, the new generation would still called "half-orc". What if the "half-orc" and a "human" had offspring though? Would the new generation now be back in the "human" race category or still in the "half-orc" category? The new generation would be 75% "human" and only 25% "orc". How many generations does it take? I am not sure if enough time has gone by since the different races have met each other for this to have happened yet. Rolandius Paladin (talk - contr) 03:09, 25 December 2008 (UTC)

Cataclysm Classes[]

I propose we Put a "C" in the spots for the new classes for Cataclysm. We have a list already: For the Alliance: gnome priests, night elf mages, human hunters, dwarf mages, dwarf shamans. For the Horde: blood elf warriors, troll druids, tauren priests, tauren paladins, orc mages and undead hunters--Lego3400 (talk) 00:09, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

You're assuming you have to have the expansion in order to play those race/class combos, which may not be the case. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 00:39, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
That's not what I'm assuming. Regardless of of whether or not it requires it (which I also doubt) the classes/race combo is not going to be avalibe to anyone until the game is released (or the patch that ushers in the the EP which ever comes first). I'm basically saying "Mark these classes as "When it comes out, this race/class combo will open up to players"--Lego3400 (talk) 22:01, 22 August 2009 (UTC)
I managed to pull it off myself. However, the new races need to be added (The Class Page already added them to it's table) (I made the Same changes there and they ran with it and improved upon it :D) -Lego3400 (talk) 08:20, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Forgive me if I'm out of date, but is there an actual list of which new class/race combos will be allowed, or was this extrapolation based on the trailer?--Ragestorm (talk · contr) 13:40, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
No the class-combinations were confirmed at blizzcon, and a class-combination sheet can be found at the official site Aedror42 (talk) 15:39, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Ah, right, thanks, I just wanted to avoid a repeat of previous trailer extrapolations. --Ragestorm (talk · contr) 19:27, 23 August 2009 (UTC)
Shouldn't this be removed for old races now that 4.0.3a has hit and the none Worgen and Goblin options are available. -Scotepi (talk) 16:36, 28 November 2010 (UTC)
I was just thinking that. The C should be reserved for the Goblins and Worgen, since the other combos are available without Cataclysm. Qing Guang (talk) 04:57, 15 December 2010 (UTC)

Note that use of race may not always denote seperate species however (and may refer to ethnicities/subraces/subspecies within species).

Example please. Cite from Day of the Dragon is not correct (I think), because types = characteristic not subraces in this case:

"As with elves, dwarves, and especially humans, there had existed different types of trolls. Some few spoke with the sophistication of elves—even while they tried to take one's head. Others ranged toward the more savage, especially those who most frequented the barrows and other underground realms. Yet Vereesa doubted that there could be any lower form of troll than the three base creatures who had captured her and Falstad—and clearly had still darker designs for them."--Strizh (talk) 11:21, November 24, 2009 (UTC)

It's confusing how you have named the Undead race as "Forsaken" on this page, which is the name of the faction of playable Undead. I was unable to change the code so it would say "Undead" instead of "Forsaken", but I would appreciate if anyone could get it done. The Undead players are classified as "undead" in-game, and should so be on this page aswell.--WoWWiki-Odolwa (talk) 22:54, December 27, 2009 (UTC)

Race/Class combo change[]

Why did all those C's get put back in the chart? It's confusing and implies that you must have Cataclysm in order to get those combos, which is decidedly untrue. If you want, make a legacy note or something about what was unavailabe, but there's no need for it to be in the chart. Qing Guang (talk) 05:12, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Outdated Base Attribute Tables Since Legion Update[]

As tagged on the article, the tables on base attributes - including Template:Playable races and classes which is used in this article - have been outdated since Legion as Spirit has been removed as an attribute. As such, it is highly likely that the starting attributes have been rebalanced to ensure equal total attribute points across races, but I have no access to such information. Is anybody able to gather it to update the tables accordingly? --Madrenergic (talk) 16:00, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

How it is possible to get these values? Xporc (talk) 19:35, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
Most spirit was changed to versatility, for items at least. Don't know if this is the case for the base stats, or if those points were just consolidated into other stats. PeterWind (talk) 20:00, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
I think the only way to get those updated attributes is to just make a bunch of new characters (and, presumably, delete them thereafter). -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 20:02, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
I think you'll need an addon as well to see all the stats, otherwise the default interface will only show you ones relevant to your class. SnakeSssssssssssssssssssssssss Coobra sig3For Pony! (Sssss/Slithered) 20:12, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
To help things move along faster, I did a bit of research and installed DejaCharacterStats to gather the data myself. Because I'm on WOW Starter Edition, I need somebody to help me type in the base stats of the Death Knight as a human.
I've also noticed a few observations about the new changes to the stats system:
1. Stamina starts as a fixed number for all classes within a race, it only varies BETWEEN races
2. Total stat points between classes are different, however they remain the same for different races WITHIN the same class
3. Stat point scaling may follow different curves between different classes (warlocks start off with the most INT, but mages end the game with the highest)
4. The canonical order of attributes shown in WOW (game client) as well as WOW Armory (app) is now STR-AGI-INT-STA, rather than STR-AGI-STA-INT as it is currently done now
Hence, I've made some relevant modifications to the tables, namely:
1. Depicting class as the source of base attributes, with race being a modifier, rather than it is done now (race gives base attributes while class is a modifier), to make it easier to compare stats between races, and the irrelevance of comparing stats between classes (different classes have different total attribute points at the start; stats will scale differently for different classes; raw stat numbers are designed for the class's own scaling and will confuse comparisons across classes, eg agility-based class like Rogue starts with higher Str than a strength-based class like Warrior)
2. The order of attributes has been corrected to STR-AGI-INT-STA, to standardise with available sources of information
Moving ahead, we will probably need to push the updates to individual Race and Class pages as well
