"Garde" is for "guard" obviously. Does this mean that the city started as the stronghold about to the running river? Pay your attention at the name of the fortress-tower from «Lord of the Rings» known as Isengarde. Which has word "Isen-" herited from the river so-called and "-garde" for "hold".
