Transmogrify

Transmogrification, implemented in Patch 4.3, provides the ability to exchange the appearance of your armor and weapons with those of other items. However you must possess and be able to equip both items, and both must be of the same armor or weapon type. Not all items or pairings can be used in the transmogrification process.[1][2][3]

Transmogrifying

Note: The cost of each transmogrification is the target item's vendor price, with a minimum of 10g at level 85 - lower-level characters have an adjusted minimum cost.

To transmogrify gear, first obtain items whose appearance you wish to impose on your equipped gear, and take them to a transmogrifier NPC:

Horde
Warpweaver Dushar in the Drag in Orgrimmar, in the building opposite the cooking trainer.
Warpweaver Shafiee in the Shrine of Two Moons.
Alliance
Warpweaver Hashom in The Three Winds in Stormwind, a shop next to the canal on the southwest side of Cathedral Square.
Warpweaver Ramahesh in the Shrine of Seven Stars.

Note that each of these NPCs is accompanied by the NPCs who offer the void storage and reforging services.

Right-click on the transmogrifier. You will be presented with the transmogrification interface, which shows your current equipment, similar to the standard character equipment window. Worn equipment which has not been transmogrified will be displayed in gray, while equipment which has been transmogrified will bear the colored icon of the items whose appearance they are displaying.

To transmogrify an equipped item, drag the model item onto the slot of the item that will be transmogrified, or just right-click the model item in your inventory. You will be shown your character model as it would appear after the transmogrification, plus the fee that will be required. You may drag additional model items onto other slots. Finally, click the "Apply" button. You will be charged the fee and your equipped item's appearance will change.

If you don't want to perform the transmogrification, simply close the window or walk away.

Obtaining model gear

Subject to certain restrictions, gear from nearly any source can be used to transmogrify, such as: world drops, quest rewards, badge vendors, and crafting.

For the dungeon sets 1 and 2 from Vanilla, which are no longer obtainable, you can buy replicas from vendors at the Darkmoon Faire. These items were specifically made available for transmogrification.

The auction house is a good source as well, though desirable items may command high prices.

Transmogrification rules

Transmogrification Rules | 2011-09-20 01:50 | Blizzard Entertainment Kaivax

Since we announced the transmogrification feature coming to World of Warcraft with patch 4.3, we have monitored thousands of follow-up comments, questions and suggestions from players all over the world.

What follows is our current list of rules for transmogrification. This is a set of rules that we expect to change over time, and is not intended to be 100% comprehensive, but we hope that it can be referenced to answer most questions that players currently have about what they can and cannot expect to be able to do with transmogrification.

  • The character must be able to equip both items.
  • Only uncommon (green), rare (blue) or epic (purple) items may be transmogrified. (exceptions: a select few of these items will be prevented from being used to transmogrify if they are inappropriate)
  • Items must share the same armor type (examples: plate for plate, cloth for cloth)
  • Weapons must be the same weapon type (exceptions: Guns, Crossbows, or Bows)
  • Guns, Crossbows, and Bows can be used to transmogrify Guns, Crossbows, or Bows.
  • Main hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Main hand weapons.
  • Off-hand weapons can only be used to transmogrify Off-hand weapons.
  • One handed weapons can be used to transmogrify a Main hand or Off-hand weapon.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it soulbound.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-refundable.
  • Using an item for transmogrify makes it non-tradable.
  • Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be transmogrified.
  • Heirlooms and Account Bound items can be used to transmogrify.
  • Legendary items cannot be transmogrified.
  • Legendary items cannot be used to transmogrify.
  • Fishing Poles cannot be transmogrified.
  • Fishing Poles cannot be used to transmogrify.
  • Mailing an item strips its transmogrification.
  • Placing an item in Void Storage strips its transmogrification.
  • Vendoring an item strips its transmogrification.
  • The displayed enchant will be that of the currently equipped item.
  • There may be individual items that are excluded from being transmogrified on the basis that they were originally added to the game as absurdities. (examples: a weapon that looks like a fish, or a chest piece that is invisible)

  • Transmogrification can also be used on certain miscellaneous items (armor that is neither cloth, leather, mail nor plate) but is only compatible to other miscellaneous items. As these are rarely used in combat situations, it has little use since you could just equip the item with the desired look anyway. At best, you can make your Achievement profession chefhat [Chef's Hat] look like a Inv misc rabbit ears [Spring Circlet].
  • Items from the Legacy Armor and Weapon Quartermasters cannot be used in transmogrification. However, characters that acquired the right to purchase these items during Classic can acquire Replica items from vendors in Area 52 that are compatible. This cumbersome method had to be used because the Feats of Strength for the Classic PvP titles could not be directly associated with the ability to use these items for transmogrification, and because it cannot be determined when a player purchased them.[4]

Possible changes in Mists of Pandaria

When Blizzard have been asked on the Guild Perks that will be added in Mists of Pandaria, they have openly indicated interest in the possibility of there being perks that will reduce the cost of Transmogrification to players.[5]

Patch changes

  • Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.2.0 (2013-03-05): Transmogrification rules have been broadened for several weapon types.
    • Two-handed axes, maces, and swords can be transmogrified to each other.
    • One-handed axes, maces, and swords can be transmogrified to each other.
    • Staves and polearms can be transmogrified to each other.
  • Cataclysm Patch 4.3.0 (2011-11-29): Feature added.
