WoW is SUPER ADDICTIVE! Don't play it if you value your free time... ;-)

Got stuff back Smiley.gif

I unlocked my account by calling billing support and I have a bunch of restored items in the mail (they appear to have an increased expiration of 90 days). There do seem to be a few quirks (items restored that I'm pretty sure I didn't have and a few that didn't get restored), but I'm too lazy to get them fixed. It will take me a few days to reorganize and put stuff back, but I'm feeling less irritated by the whole thing. Next to do: convert to and activate my iPhone Authenticator. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:38 PM PST 26 Oct 2009

Account inaccessible Frowney.gif

I guess I took too long to get my account restored, so now I can't even log in (at web site or game). My login and password are recognized, but maybe I changed my password too many times while deciding what was good and it triggered some kind of automatic lockout. Hopefully I'll be back in action this week, but I haven't played WoW since I got hacked. At least most of my welfare epics didn't get sold off... only lost one trinket that I can tell. I never was a big end-game player, so what I really missed was the gold (I had almost 20K). Theoretically I will only have lost some mail stuff (which unfortunately was alot since I keep alot of AH stuff in transit between chars). --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:04 PM PST 25 Oct 2009

I got hacked

...and yes, it sucks. I'm not a great WoW player, but I'm good at working the AH and I lost alot of gold (around 10,000g not counting my stuff). Sigh. I was lazy and didn't use the authenticator. I guess I have to if I decide to continue playing. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 4:55 PM PST 7 Oct 2009

Condolences, man. Someone hit ya with a keylogger, or did they just bust your account by brute force? ... and has CS helped you get your stuff back? --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 17:32, October 7, 2009 (UTC)
I suspect brute force, since my password wasn't the most secure, but it worked for 4+ years. I'm going to start the process of trying to restore my gold and stuff later today. I sent an e-mail out. Could not get in touch with any Blizz folks in-game (maybe it was a mass attack?). --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:31 PM PST 7 Oct 2009

Sabbatical update

Forum:Permaban Rolandius? and some other stuff I've learned about those involved has gotten me pretty down. I probably won't be coming fully back from my sabbatical until nearer the end of the year. I'll be spending most of my Wikia contributing at WikiAnswers. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:00 PM PST 21 Aug 2009

I think a nomination is fine, I just have some questions before you go forward.

  • Do I need to hang out on MIRC/chat?
  • Would I have any responsibilities/commitments? or is adminship more like access to do deletes, ip bans for spammers, etc?
  • Anything else I should I know?

I'm honored - thanks for thinking of me. Emot-awesome.gif (and lol, I really need to work on getting a sig working. This is kind of dull, don't u think?) -Howbizr (talk) 20:08, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

You are definitely the best candidate for admin in my mind, but I'm looking for others.
  • Being on IRC will make you more liked by that crowd, but it is not necessary.
  • We don't put specific responsibilities on admins, but here are some of the things it is good to see admins doing:
  • I would do a thorough review of current policies and the more popular guidelines, but mostly so other policy lawyers don't embarrass you too much. Winky.gif
  • Feel more free to create new articles that you think would be generally helpful, i.e. ask forgiveness and not permission.
  • If you get the job, make sure you get on the admin mailing list (ask Kirkburn).
See the Administrator section of Special:ListGroupRights for the powers admins get. I usually check with Pcj or Kirkburn for any javascript or CSS changes or ideas I have (which is rare).

If you really think wowwiki needs more admins, Eirik Ratcatcher comes to mind as a possibility. He's a very courteous editor, but I would definitely still give him the quality of bold. Cuttable gems progress

... and it is a whole lot more satisfying than dealing with the Undead problem... :) --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 18:21, 21 July 2009 (UTC)

could you point out the particular concepts you'd like removed? And... how to describe 'uninvolved' without adding to the size of the page... :) The usual definition would be something along the lines of "someone who is not already a party to the dispute". Would be grateful for aid on describing "who is uninvolved". IMO, we are running low on admins who could be considered uninvolved re Rolandius; but that's also part of why the ban issue came up. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 17:38, 23 July 2009 (UTC)

I'm mostly concerned with using Wikipedia concepts wholesale without tailoring them for WoWWiki. Also, "uninvolved" may be a difficult standard to reach with such a small active admin base. By what I've read from the Wikipedia policies we couldn't follow them without violating at least half the rules. Or at least, many of the admins would violate many of the rules with impunity if judged by past actions. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:18 PM PST 23 Jul 2009
Please feel free to edit the page yourself, if only to flag the things you think should be removed, replaced, or altered. (I'm willing to do the heavy lifting, but I need direction...) I'm not actually an admin, I don't know what procedures you guys DO follow. It really-truly does need input from as many admins as I can sit on and coerce into writing. It isn't 'consensus' unless it's consensus, after all. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 18:24, 24 July 2009 (UTC)
Some stuff I'm not sure how I want to change, so I may comment on the talk page instead. What you're doing is how is has been done in the past when policies were first getting developed, but in the past admins seemed to be more involved. Despite all the supposed interest in the topic, strangely only a few admins are willing to submit their behavior to policy scrutiny. I don't think I was an admin when many of the policies were first proposed. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11:28 AM PST 24 Jul 2009

RPG titles

I wanted to ask what you thought. Should the Warcraft RPG and World of Warcraft RPG systems be combined into the same terms as the Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game and World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game books? I was trying to seperate them so users could see the difference between the "Warcraft RPG" and "World of Warcraft RPG" which are the names of the game systems with Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game and World of Warcraft: The Roleplaying Game which are the names of two books. My edits were reverted, but then I was told I was going to make an edit war. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 11:19, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Apparently, Gourra thinks villages, races, single mobs, etc. are organizations in Warcraft. I tried doing a cleanup to remove entries that were non-organizations, but he just reverted the whole thing and won't answer me on his talk page when I asked him about it. I talked about it at length in Talk:Organization but apparently that wasn't enough discussing I am told. Using my experience on WoWWiki and what I was told by admins when I tried to make organizations which were not up to par, I think the majority of my edits were correct and that those are non-organizations. I could be wrong on some of them but there is no way every single one of those I removed is an organization as we know it in Warcraft. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 11:26, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

It also seems easier for someone to add something to the article which they think is an organization then for someone to take something out that is not an organization. Or it could just be because I am the one trying to fix it. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 11:28, 26 July 2009 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the definition for "organization" is pretty broad, so alot of the contents of that revert could be justified, except maybe Dolomite giant. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 12:34 PM PST 26 Jul 2009
Ah well. A lot of them I removed look like a single mob, a race, a village, etc. Warcraft III has many organizations, yet I was told they were more like "teams" or "groups". Something like that. Looking at the Organization article, it looks most of those I mentioned from Warcraft III are okay to be called organizations now. Rolandius Paladin.gif (talk - contr) 00:17, 27 July 2009 (UTC)

World of Warcraft mineral items cat

I'm on the verge of demolishing Category:World of Warcraft mineral items as a particularly silly and redundant concept. It may originally have been conceived of as a 'mining crafted items' sort of category, but at this point, the only entry in it that I don't have an argument with is Stones; and one sub-cat does not make a category viable. (Other "ingredient items" categories include other things like, say, frostweave cloth. Clearly not mineral. Elemental items. Not mineral.) Thought I'd ping you first. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 20:17, 30 July 2009 (UTC)

There is nothing wrong with the category, it is just being misused. If you look at the mineral article, it explains what kind of items should be in the category. It used to have the right items and sub-categories, but apparently some people went and removed it and started adding inappropriate stuff. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:19 PM PST 30 Jul 2009
The definition in Minerals is still fairly weak, or the tables within the page are poorly maintained. How does "Minerals are precious stone items often usable as an ingredient for professions" not encompass things like "dense stone"? And how does it avoid the common definition of the word, which would include all ores as well?
As an instance of how unevenly the Minerals page has been maintained, Northsea Pearl is on the list, but Jaggal Pearl is not.
Would you do me the favor of describing those features that all Minerals have, and all non-Minerals lack? I could speculate, but I'd prefer not to. Partially, I'd like to see how Mineral Items would change, or be included with, the gem items categories we're currently developing. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 00:06, 31 July 2009 (UTC)
Well, we need to decide if the WoW meaning of minerals means minerals as in crystalline, mined, or generally anything inorganic. I think it is okay to call anything mined a mineral, but I think it is a mistake to include all gems as minerals. Lots of pages are poorly maintained. This is just one of many.
You may be wondering why I'm not fixing these kind of things, even though I appear to notice them. Well, consider it a self-imposed restriction of my sabbatical. I will randomly fix minor things, but I'm not going to do any major changes or changes that require alot of repeated small changes. Part of the point of my sabbatical is to observe how WoWWiki is doing without my usually very active involvement. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 5:15 PM PST 30 Jul 2009
Okay, then! I'll restrict myself to asking you only two impossible things per day, then. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 23:41, 31 July 2009 (UTC)

I am dissatisfied with the current {{gems}} and {{minerals}} footer navbars. I have created User:Eirik Ratcatcher/Raw Gems SB, and would appreciate comments on it, if you can spare the time. I wrote it on the principle that people who are interested in gemcutting would want to know about only the cuttables (asy, from  [Lionseye]), folks interested in jewelcraft gems would want to know about the 'minerals' (say, from  [Tigerseye]), and that there is an overlap between those two areas. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 20:22, 21 August 2009 (UTC)

Engineering specialization

With 3.2.0, there are now quests you can do to switch engineering specializations. I know little more about them than that while Eirik/chromaggus (my main) is currently a gnomish engineer, I see both a 'gnome engineering' and 'goblin engineering' quest from particular critters in Ironforge. I'll have to level an alt to where they can get to that point, and have them swap... I noticed you'd copied old notes on specialization swapping; those are at least partially obsolete.

The big difference seems to be that you *probably* don't have to re-level your skill. ... which would imply you do not lose those recipes you'd learned from Schematics (except possibly ones linked to your old spec). IE Mote extractor stays with you. ... maybe. --Eirik Ratcatcher (talk) 19:35, 20 August 2009 (UTC)

According to the Patch 3.2 notes you can do it for a fee. I have 400+ engineer, so I will investigate this also. I just put the patch notes in the Switching specializations section for now and comment out the old stuff. I'll fill it in as I find more. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:03 PM PST 20 Aug 2009

[1] ← Out of interest, what uses of Template:effecttip require a line break after it by default? -- foxlit (talk) 20:54, September 17, 2009 (UTC)

If you want just a buff tip that's not at the bottom of a table. Most effecttips are at the bottom of table cells, but for just the buff by itself it seems to pull following sections up and to the right if you have it default to float left. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 2:16 AM PST 19 Sep 2009
Based on that, I'd say that the (limited) situation where the tooltips should appear in-line should just pass |float=none to the template, rather than making that the default. This also matches how other tooltip-like templates work. If you've got any concrete pages where that template is used to display effects in-line, I'll be happy to fix those. :) -- foxlit (talk) 20:49, September 19, 2009 (UTC)

By that logic we should be citing literally every single shred of text on the wiki, up to and including every quest and item in the game, just because "someone" might not have personally seen it. And Pcj already pointed out on the Lil' KT page that screenshots as citations are generally against the citation guidelines. -- Dark T Zeratul (talk) 23:33, November 5, 2009 (UTC)
No, most other text on the wiki can be seen in an easily accessible public source like the official sites, news webs sites, or databases. In-game official e-mails can really only be proven by screenshots. This is why WoW news sites use screenshots for new drops that haven't gotten into DBs. --Gengar orange 22x22.pngBeware the sneaky smile! Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11:37 PM PST 5 Nov 2009
